GM bulletin PIT5099G

What it saysThis Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician about vehicles that the Heater-Vent-Air Conditioning blows warm air. NHTSA’s full summary ↓

GM filed this with NHTSA as a service bulletin dated Sep 26, 2023, received Dec 26, 2023, about the visibility/wiper. It names 264 model years across Chevrolet, GMC, Buick and Cadillac (2016–2022). A service bulletin is not a safety recall: it is the manufacturer telling its dealers how to diagnose or repair a condition, and whether the work is paid for depends on the warranty in force. Quoting the number at a service desk can save a diagnosis.

One page for every brand it was filed under. Each brand’s bulletins: Chevrolet · GMC · Buick · Cadillac.

The summary is NHTSA’s abstract of the document, as filed under 49 CFR 579.5. One communication is usually filed as several documents — the bulletin, a dealer notice, an owner letter — and the number on any of them finds this page. A PDF link is shown only once NHTSA’s own server has been seen to serve that document; the rest are checked over the following nights. Quote the number at a service desk; it is what the dealer’s system is keyed on.

What owners reported

Source: NHTSA complaint database

Owners of the 263 model years this bulletin names have filed 35,425 complaints with NHTSA since 2015. 251 of them name Visibility/Wiper — the same broad component group this bulletin is filed under. NHTSA groups complaints coarsely, so that means the same area of the vehicle, not necessarily the same fault.

On the 2016 Chevrolet Equinox, the 49 owners who gave an odometer reading for Visibility/Wiper reported it at a median of 74,000 miles. That figure is one model year’s, not the whole range this bulletin covers — medians from different model years are not averaged.

The contact owns a 2021 Cadillac XT5. The contact stated that while driving 30 MPH, the vehicle in front of her kicked up a rock off the roadway and cracked the windshield. The vehicle was taken to Safelite, and the windshield was repaired. The dealer was not made aware of the failure. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure.

2021 Cadillac XT5 · Visibility/Wiper · filed with NHTSA Mar 21, 2025

The contact owns a 2016 Gmc Terrain. While driving approximately 30 MPH in inclement weather, the windshield wipers became inoperable. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the windshield wiper motor failed and needed to be replaced. The repair was still pending. The approximate failure mileage was 89,000

2016 GMC Terrain · Visibility/Wiper · filed with NHTSA Jul 30, 2019

The contact owns a 2022 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the sunroof exploded without impact. There was a hole detected in the glass. There were no reported injuries. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, and it was determined that the sunroof assembly needed to be replaced.

2022 Chevrolet Equinox · Visibility/Wiper · filed with NHTSA Feb 9, 2023

A complaint is one owner’s account, not a defect finding, and a bulletin is not a recall. Nothing here says this bulletin was issued because of these complaints, or that the repair it describes fixed them. Complaint files on this site begin in 2015.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR 579.5

Is GM PIT5099G a recall?

No. A service bulletin is a manufacturer communication filed with NHTSA under 49 CFR 579.5; a safety recall carries an NHTSA campaign number (two digits, a letter, six digits) and a federal duty to repair for free. Check the vehicle’s recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or on its page here.

Is the PIT5099G repair free?

Not automatically. A service bulletin describes how to diagnose or repair a condition; who pays depends on the warranty in force, any extension, and the dealer. Quoting the number can save a diagnosis either way.

Which vehicles does PIT5099G cover?

The manufacturer filed it against 264 model years across 4 brands (Chevrolet, GMC, Buick and Cadillac): 2019 Buick Cascada, 2018 Buick Cascada, 2017 Buick Cascada, 2016 Buick Cascada, 2022 Buick Enclave, 2021 Buick Enclave and more. Whether one particular vehicle is affected is a matter of its VIN and its build, not its model year alone.
