GM bulletin PIT5551M

What it saysThis Preliminary information communicates a "Forward Collision System Reduced" message displayed on the DIC when the Forward Automatic Braking has been set to the "Alert" setting. NHTSA’s full summary ↓

GM filed this with NHTSA as a service bulletin dated Nov 9, 2023, received Dec 18, 2023, about the forward collision avoidance. It names 166 model years across Chevrolet, GMC, Buick and Cadillac (2016–2024). A service bulletin is not a safety recall: it is the manufacturer telling its dealers how to diagnose or repair a condition, and whether the work is paid for depends on the warranty in force. Quoting the number at a service desk can save a diagnosis.

The summary is NHTSA’s abstract of the document, as filed under 49 CFR 579.5. One communication is usually filed as several documents — the bulletin, a dealer notice, an owner letter — and the number on any of them finds this page. A PDF link is shown only once NHTSA’s own server has been seen to serve that document; the rest are checked over the following nights. Quote the number at a service desk; it is what the dealer’s system is keyed on.

What owners reported

Source: NHTSA complaint database

Owners of the 165 model years this bulletin names have filed 27,880 complaints with NHTSA since 2015. 524 of them name Forward Collision Avoidance — the same broad component group this bulletin is filed under. NHTSA groups complaints coarsely, so that means the same area of the vehicle, not necessarily the same fault.

I was driving with my cruise control set at 77 mph in the fast lane of a four-lane highway. There was no one in front of me for more than 3/4 of a mile. A car in the lane to my right apparently triggered the automatic breaking system to the point it slammed on my brakes, pushed me into the steering wheel, and slowed me all the way to 38…

Good day, We purchased our 2024 Chevy Equinox EV a month and a half ago. The issue we are having is very concerning. The vehicle will suddenly come to a complete stop at unexpected times. At first, it happened 3 times while we were backing up. There was no object in the road, no warning beeps, no shaking of the seat.

A complaint is one owner’s account, not a defect finding, and a bulletin is not a recall. Nothing here says this bulletin was issued because of these complaints, or that the repair it describes fixed them. Complaint files on this site begin in 2015.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR 579.5

Is GM PIT5551M a recall?

No. A service bulletin is a manufacturer communication filed with NHTSA under 49 CFR 579.5; a safety recall carries an NHTSA campaign number (two digits, a letter, six digits) and a federal duty to repair for free. Check the vehicle’s recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or on its page here.

Is the PIT5551M repair free?

Not automatically. A service bulletin describes how to diagnose or repair a condition; who pays depends on the warranty in force, any extension, and the dealer. Quoting the number can save a diagnosis either way.

Which vehicles does PIT5551M cover?

The manufacturer filed it against 166 model years across 4 brands (Chevrolet, GMC, Buick and Cadillac): 2024 Buick Enclave, 2023 Buick Enclave, 2022 Buick Enclave, 2021 Buick Enclave, 2020 Buick Enclave, 2019 Buick Enclave and more. Whether one particular vehicle is affected is a matter of its VIN and its build, not its model year alone.
