What it saysVehicles may occasionally be subjected to contamination by airborne iron particles shed from railroad tracks, train wheels, exposure to heavy machinery facilities, grinding, welding, etc. NHTSA’s full summary ↓

Toyota filed this with NHTSA as a service bulletin dated May 15, 2024, received Jul 23, 2024, about the structure — 1 document under this number: T-SB-0062-23 Rev1. It names 186 model years (2016–2025). What the bulletin says

Source: NHTSA's summary of the manufacturer's communication

Vehicles may occasionally be subjected to contamination by airborne iron particles shed from railroad tracks, train wheels, exposure to heavy machinery facilities, grinding, welding, etc. This type of contamination can be identified by the presence of small, red or brown particles on the paint surface. These particles are often difficult to see on dark color paints but can be easily felt when brushing a hand across horizontal body surfaces such as the hood, roof, or deck lid.

The summary is NHTSA’s abstract of the document, as filed under 49 CFR 579.5. One communication is usually filed as several documents — the bulletin, a dealer notice, an owner letter — and the number on any of them finds this page. A PDF link is shown only once NHTSA’s own server has been seen to serve that document; the rest are checked over the following nights. Quote the number at a service desk; it is what the dealer’s system is keyed on.

What owners reported

Source: NHTSA complaint database

Owners of the 163 model years this bulletin names have filed 16,716 complaints with NHTSA since 2015. 635 of them name Structure — the same broad component group this bulletin is filed under. NHTSA groups complaints coarsely, so that means the same area of the vehicle, not necessarily the same fault.

On the 2020 Toyota RAV4, the 19 owners who gave an odometer reading for Structure reported it at a median of 9,000 miles. That figure is one model year’s, not the whole range this bulletin covers — medians from different model years are not averaged.

Obnoxious wind noise!!! Dealer service mgr acknowledged it was loud but said all on his lot were loud, mine was much louder but told it was a design flaw. It is. Huge distraction while driving anything over 30 MPH. It's literally wind noise not road noise. They will not even try to repair it ... Too bad you spent $50,000 just live with it

2019 Toyota Highlander · Structure · filed with NHTSA Jan 17, 2020 · ODI 11300215

My compilation of known issues are: 1. Bumper gap: front bumper gets dislocated from the main body of the car that can cause road debris/hazard 2. Flimsy / slipping clutch: causing grindy shifter (1-2-3) or lose control of the vehicle’s acceleration 3. Oil overheating and rear differential 2WD: might contribute to car’s sudden combustion

2023 Toyota Corolla · Structure · filed with NHTSA Jul 3, 2024 · ODI 11598691

Car has loud continuous creaking/squeaking noise from left rear of the car. Sounds like it is coming from the suspension or body flexing when driving. It occurs when turning and reversing out of parking spaces. Also happens when car is going uphill and downhill and on winding roads. Driver seat also squeaks when in a certain position.

A complaint is one owner’s account, not a defect finding, and a bulletin is not a recall. Nothing here says this bulletin was issued because of these complaints, or that the repair it describes fixed them. Complaint files on this site begin in 2015.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR 579.5

Is Toyota T-SB-0062-23 REV1 a recall?

No. A service bulletin is a manufacturer communication filed with NHTSA under 49 CFR 579.5; a safety recall carries an NHTSA campaign number (two digits, a letter, six digits) and a federal duty to repair for free. Check the vehicle’s recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or on its page here.

Is the T-SB-0062-23 REV1 repair free?

Not automatically. A service bulletin describes how to diagnose or repair a condition; who pays depends on the warranty in force, any extension, and the dealer. Quoting the number can save a diagnosis either way. Every Toyota warranty extension on file lists the ones Toyota has filed.

Which vehicles does T-SB-0062-23 REV1 cover?

The manufacturer filed it against 186 model years: 2025 Toyota 4Runner, 2023 Toyota 4Runner, 2022 Toyota 4Runner, 2021 Toyota 4Runner, 2020 Toyota 4Runner, 2019 Toyota 4Runner and more. Whether one particular vehicle is affected is a matter of its VIN and its build, not its model year alone.
