GM bulletin PIT5551K

What it saysThis Preliminary information communicates a "Forward Collision System Reduced" message displayed on the DIC when the Forward Automatic Braking has been set to the "Alert" setting. NHTSA’s full summary ↓

GM filed this with NHTSA as a service bulletin dated Jul 18, 2023, received Aug 21, 2023, about the forward collision avoidance. It names 147 model years across Chevrolet, GMC, Buick and Cadillac (2016–2023). A service bulletin is not a safety recall: it is the manufacturer telling its dealers how to diagnose or repair a condition, and whether the work is paid for depends on the warranty in force. Quoting the number at a service desk can save a diagnosis.

The summary is NHTSA’s abstract of the document, as filed under 49 CFR 579.5. One communication is usually filed as several documents — the bulletin, a dealer notice, an owner letter — and the number on any of them finds this page. A PDF link is shown only once NHTSA’s own server has been seen to serve that document; the rest are checked over the following nights. Quote the number at a service desk; it is what the dealer’s system is keyed on.

What owners reported

Source: NHTSA complaint database

Owners of the 146 model years this bulletin names have filed 26,134 complaints with NHTSA since 2015. 278 of them name Forward Collision Avoidance — the same broad component group this bulletin is filed under. NHTSA groups complaints coarsely, so that means the same area of the vehicle, not necessarily the same fault.

Driving on freeway, vehicle in front slowed down and my vehicle detected vehicle in front slowing down only slowed, not stopping), so my vehicle immediately braked to a stop on the freeway. Concern vehicles behind me of rear end collision. Vehicle would not allow me to proceed until until my vehicle was at a complete stop.

2023 Cadillac XT4 · Forward Collision Avoidance · filed with NHTSA Mar 1, 2026

With cruise control activated, at least 10 times since I bought this expensive vehicle the automated emergency braking activated at highway speeds - causing the vehicle to full brake without warning and nearly causing an accident each time (handling risk and risk of being impacted from behind by a following vehicle).

2021 Chevrolet Suburban · Forward Collision Avoidance · filed with NHTSA Sep 19, 2022

Vehicle stops unexpectedly in parking lots (5-10mph) and on freeways (70-76mph). Speed ranges from 5 - 75 mph. Unexpected braking occurs for no reason. There are typically no obstructions or vehicles in front of the vehicle. It is most concerning when the vehicle automatically applies braking traveling at 70-76mph

2020 Cadillac Escalade · Forward Collision Avoidance · filed with NHTSA Jan 16, 2024

A complaint is one owner’s account, not a defect finding, and a bulletin is not a recall. Nothing here says this bulletin was issued because of these complaints, or that the repair it describes fixed them. Complaint files on this site begin in 2015.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR 579.5

Is GM PIT5551K a recall?

No. A service bulletin is a manufacturer communication filed with NHTSA under 49 CFR 579.5; a safety recall carries an NHTSA campaign number (two digits, a letter, six digits) and a federal duty to repair for free. Check the vehicle’s recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or on its page here.

Is the PIT5551K repair free?

Not automatically. A service bulletin describes how to diagnose or repair a condition; who pays depends on the warranty in force, any extension, and the dealer. Quoting the number can save a diagnosis either way.

Which vehicles does PIT5551K cover?

The manufacturer filed it against 147 model years across 4 brands (Chevrolet, GMC, Buick and Cadillac): 2023 Buick Enclave, 2022 Buick Enclave, 2021 Buick Enclave, 2020 Buick Enclave, 2019 Buick Enclave, 2018 Buick Enclave and more. Whether one particular vehicle is affected is a matter of its VIN and its build, not its model year alone.
