Volvo bulletin TJ31514.1.0

What it saysThis a Technical Journal: ASDM = Active Safety Domain Master To prevent unnecessary replacements of ASDM and as a troubleshooting aid for the Intellisafe system, please follow the advice in Technical Journal NHTSA’s full summary ↓

Volvo filed this with NHTSA as a service bulletin dated May 20, 2025, received Jul 9, 2025, about the forward collision avoidance. It names 60 model years (2016–2026). A service bulletin is not a safety recall: it is the manufacturer telling its dealers how to diagnose or repair a condition, and whether the work is paid for depends on the warranty in force. Quoting the number at a service desk can save a diagnosis.

Read by machine from the document NHTSA serves (4 pages), read Sep 30, 2026. A part number is shown only where it matches Volvo’s own catalogue shape, an operation only with its code and time, and a description only where the reader got it whole; anything it could not settle is left out, and the PDF is the record. Times are the manufacturer’s warranty allowances, not a quote. Listings and prices on eBay Motors are the seller’s.

The summary is NHTSA’s abstract of the document, as filed under 49 CFR 579.5. One communication is usually filed as several documents — the bulletin, a dealer notice, an owner letter — and the number on any of them finds this page. A PDF link is shown only once NHTSA’s own server has been seen to serve that document; the rest are checked over the following nights. Quote the number at a service desk; it is what the dealer’s system is keyed on.

Doing the repair yourself, or pricing it before the shop does? Search the part by fitment on eBay Motors — the listing and the price are the seller’s.

What owners reported

Source: NHTSA complaint database

Owners of the 59 model years this bulletin names have filed 1,352 complaints with NHTSA since 2015. 124 of them name Forward Collision Avoidance — the same broad component group this bulletin is filed under. NHTSA groups complaints coarsely, so that means the same area of the vehicle, not necessarily the same fault.

The infotainment will randomly overheat and a system warning will come on that begins cooling the cluster by turning on the air vents. I have taken the vehicle to Volvo several times to address the issue and they do a software update but the problem returns within a few weeks. The safety sensors will also randomly turn off while driving.

While backing out of garage, the car abruptly and violently braked. The driver was tossed forward. The rear camera showed nothing in the car's path and no alarms had been set off. Visual review confirmed the absence of anything in the path of the automobile. The automobile was purchased new about 7-10 days before this occurrence.

2023 Volvo XC60 · Forward Collision Avoidance · filed with NHTSA Feb 2, 2023 · ODI 11505210

The contact owns a 2024 Volvo S60. The contact stated that while attempting to park the vehicle in the garage, the vehicle rolled forward after releasing the accelerator pedal and the vehicle crashed into the garage door before the brake pedal was depressed. The Forward Collision Avoidance system failed to stop the vehicle.

A complaint is one owner’s account, not a defect finding, and a bulletin is not a recall. Nothing here says this bulletin was issued because of these complaints, or that the repair it describes fixed them. Complaint files on this site begin in 2015.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR 579.5

Is Volvo TJ31514.1.0 a recall?

No. A service bulletin is a manufacturer communication filed with NHTSA under 49 CFR 579.5; a safety recall carries an NHTSA campaign number (two digits, a letter, six digits) and a federal duty to repair for free. Check the vehicle’s recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or on its page here.

Is the TJ31514.1.0 repair free?

Not automatically. A service bulletin describes how to diagnose or repair a condition; who pays depends on the warranty in force, any extension, and the dealer. Quoting the number can save a diagnosis either way.

Which vehicles does TJ31514.1.0 cover?

The manufacturer filed it against 60 model years: 2024 Volvo C40, 2023 Volvo C40, 2022 Volvo C40, 2026 Volvo EC40, 2025 Volvo EC40, 2025 Volvo EX40 and more. Whether one particular vehicle is affected is a matter of its VIN and its build, not its model year alone.
