What it saysVehicle Requires Steady Correction Steering Force to Remain in Lane NHTSA’s full summary ↓
Jaguar Land Rover filed this with NHTSA as a manufacturer communication dated Jan 27, 2026, received Feb 6, 2026, about the steering. It names 25 model years across Land Rover and Jaguar (2021–2027). The summary is NHTSA’s abstract of the document, as filed under 49 CFR 579.5. One communication is usually filed as several documents — the bulletin, a dealer notice, an owner letter — and the number on any of them finds this page. A PDF link is shown only once NHTSA’s own server has been seen to serve that document; the rest are checked over the following nights. Quote the number at a service desk; it is what the dealer’s system is keyed on.

What owners reported
Source: NHTSA complaint databaseOwners of the 25 model years this bulletin names have filed 518 complaints with NHTSA since 2015. 28 of them name Steering — the same broad component group this bulletin is filed under. NHTSA groups complaints coarsely, so that means the same area of the vehicle, not necessarily the same fault.
This morning I got into my Defender, started it, and the power steering was clearly not working at all. The steering wheel was not locked. With very significant effort I could turn the wheel. After searching online I found that this is apparently a widespread problem with Land Rover Defenders since about 2021.
2024 Land Rover Defender · Steering · filed with NHTSA Dec 26, 2023 · ODI 11561955
This is the third time this has happened. My 2019 Range Rover Evoque power steering malfunctions and the steering wheel physically will not turn the front wheels. I can only drive forward or reverse. Each time I take it to the Land Rover dealership, and they are unsure how to resolve my issue.
2025 Land Rover Discovery · Steering · filed with NHTSA Sep 29, 2026 · ODI 11767860
I was returning from work when I briefly fell asleep, causing my vehicle to drift to the curb and resulting in damage to the right-hand side wheels. This incident was caused by a failure of the Lane Departure Warning and Lane Assist systems, which were not functioning at the time.
2021 Jaguar F-Pace · Steering · filed with NHTSA Feb 27, 2026 · ODI 11720979
A complaint is one owner’s account, not a defect finding, and a bulletin is not a recall. Nothing here says this bulletin was issued because of these complaints, or that the repair it describes fixed them. Complaint files on this site begin in 2015.

Common questions
Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR 579.5Is Jaguar Land Rover SSM000021-27JAN26 a recall?
No. A manufacturer communication is a manufacturer communication filed with NHTSA under 49 CFR 579.5; a safety recall carries an NHTSA campaign number (two digits, a letter, six digits) and a federal duty to repair for free. Is the SSM000021-27JAN26 repair free?
Not automatically. A service bulletin describes how to diagnose or repair a condition; who pays depends on the warranty in force, any extension, and the dealer. Quoting the number can save a diagnosis either way.
