Volkswagen bulletin V4418012043620_7

What it saysUsing Alignment Sheet Submission Form NHTSA’s full summary ↓

Volkswagen filed this with NHTSA as a service bulletin dated May 22, 2025, received Jun 3, 2025, about the steering. It names 66 model years (2016–2025). A service bulletin is not a safety recall: it is the manufacturer telling its dealers how to diagnose or repair a condition, and whether the work is paid for depends on the warranty in force. Quoting the number at a service desk can save a diagnosis.

The summary is NHTSA’s abstract of the document, as filed under 49 CFR 579.5. One communication is usually filed as several documents — the bulletin, a dealer notice, an owner letter — and the number on any of them finds this page. A PDF link is shown only once NHTSA’s own server has been seen to serve that document; the rest are checked over the following nights. Quote the number at a service desk; it is what the dealer’s system is keyed on.

What owners reported

Source: NHTSA complaint database

Owners of the 66 model years this bulletin names have filed 7,918 complaints with NHTSA since 2015. 76 of them name Steering — the same broad component group this bulletin is filed under. NHTSA groups complaints coarsely, so that means the same area of the vehicle, not necessarily the same fault.

On the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas, the 15 owners who gave an odometer reading for Steering reported it at a median of 25,000 miles. That figure is one model year’s, not the whole range this bulletin covers — medians from different model years are not averaged.

The steering wheel shakes (vibrates) at elevated speeds (+65 mph) intermittently. It doesn't feel safe driving on a highway with a shaking steering wheel. Multiple attempts to fix at the dealer were performed. The dealer ended up saying that the car looks fine and that the shaking is due to the sensitivity of the tires to the road.

2024 Volkswagen Taos · Steering · filed with NHTSA Oct 9, 2025 · ODI 11692250

My vehicle was in motion pulling out of my driveway and turning onto the street when the steering failed completely and I was unable to direct my car. To avoid blocking traffic I had to pull into my neighbors front yard. The car was in motion and around other cars when I lost control. This is the second incident with this vehicle

2016 Volkswagen Tiguan · Steering · filed with NHTSA May 6, 2019 · ODI 11205905

Steering wheel controls stopped working, no horn either. Probably no airbag but haven't got into an accident. There was recall on the same part for the until 2018, but the new part I was going to install lists that if fits cars 2016-2022 Part # 5K0-953-569-BC Recall from VW. Number: VWP-18-11, Will replace part for my fiance

2020 Volkswagen Passat · Steering · filed with NHTSA Dec 18, 2025 · ODI 11705961

A complaint is one owner’s account, not a defect finding, and a bulletin is not a recall. Nothing here says this bulletin was issued because of these complaints, or that the repair it describes fixed them. Complaint files on this site begin in 2015.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR 579.5

Is Volkswagen V4418012043620_7 a recall?

No. A service bulletin is a manufacturer communication filed with NHTSA under 49 CFR 579.5; a safety recall carries an NHTSA campaign number (two digits, a letter, six digits) and a federal duty to repair for free. Check the vehicle’s recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or on its page here.

Is the V4418012043620_7 repair free?

Not automatically. A service bulletin describes how to diagnose or repair a condition; who pays depends on the warranty in force, any extension, and the dealer. Quoting the number can save a diagnosis either way. Every Volkswagen warranty extension on file lists the ones Volkswagen has filed.

Which vehicles does V4418012043620_7 cover?

The manufacturer filed it against 66 model years: 2023 Volkswagen Arteon, 2022 Volkswagen Arteon, 2021 Volkswagen Arteon, 2020 Volkswagen Arteon, 2019 Volkswagen Arteon, 2025 Volkswagen Atlas and more. Whether one particular vehicle is affected is a matter of its VIN and its build, not its model year alone.
