GM bulletin PIT5736C

What it saysThis Preliminary information communicates how the HVAC setting operates during a remote vehicle start. NHTSA’s full summary ↓

GM filed this with NHTSA as a service bulletin dated Nov 2, 2023, received Dec 18, 2023, about the visibility/wiper. It names 32 model years across Chevrolet and GMC (2019–2024). A service bulletin is not a safety recall: it is the manufacturer telling its dealers how to diagnose or repair a condition, and whether the work is paid for depends on the warranty in force. Quoting the number at a service desk can save a diagnosis.

The summary is NHTSA’s abstract of the document, as filed under 49 CFR 579.5. One communication is usually filed as several documents — the bulletin, a dealer notice, an owner letter — and the number on any of them finds this page. A PDF link is shown only once NHTSA’s own server has been seen to serve that document; the rest are checked over the following nights. Quote the number at a service desk; it is what the dealer’s system is keyed on.

Owners of the 32 model years this bulletin names have filed 8,553 complaints with NHTSA since 2015.

This is not a failure, just a poor design for cold temperatures. The windshield wipers are set low on the windshield, below where the defroster can reach. When it is cold/snowing outside, (which it does a lot in the Alaskan interior), the wipers remove the melted water from the windshield and push it down to where the wipers sit in the…

2023 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD · Visibility/Wiper · filed with NHTSA Nov 30, 2024 · ODI 11628100

This truck is being used in a box truck application with standard 8' wide box, 16' long. The side mirrors that come on the 2019 Silverado 5500hd do not extend out far enough to see safely along the side of the standard 8' box. It is very hard to see traffic on either side and extremely difficult to back up safely.

2019 Chevrolet Silverado · Visibility/Wiper · filed with NHTSA Aug 1, 2020 · ODI 11342694

Windshield wipers have stopped/paused during operation on two occasions midway through clearing rain from the windshield while driving down the road during rain events. Each time this has happened, the wipers have paused for approximately 2 seconds and then continued working without adjusting the controls.

2023 Chevrolet Silverado · Visibility/Wiper · filed with NHTSA Oct 27, 2023 · ODI 11552324

A complaint is one owner’s account, not a defect finding, and a bulletin is not a recall. Nothing here says this bulletin was issued because of these complaints, or that the repair it describes fixed them. Complaint files on this site begin in 2015.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR 579.5

Is GM PIT5736C a recall?

No. A service bulletin is a manufacturer communication filed with NHTSA under 49 CFR 579.5; a safety recall carries an NHTSA campaign number (two digits, a letter, six digits) and a federal duty to repair for free. Check the vehicle’s recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or on its page here.

Is the PIT5736C repair free?

Not automatically. A service bulletin describes how to diagnose or repair a condition; who pays depends on the warranty in force, any extension, and the dealer. Quoting the number can save a diagnosis either way. Every GM warranty extension on file lists the ones GM has filed.

Which vehicles does PIT5736C cover?

The manufacturer filed it against 32 model years across 2 brands (Chevrolet and GMC): 2024 Chevrolet Silverado, 2023 Chevrolet Silverado, 2022 Chevrolet Silverado, 2021 Chevrolet Silverado, 2020 Chevrolet Silverado, 2019 Chevrolet Silverado and more. Whether one particular vehicle is affected is a matter of its VIN and its build, not its model year alone.
