Mercedes-Benz bulletin LI08.10-N-078545

What it saysComplaint: Noises when reversing slowly <5 km/h (squeaking) Cause: There is a seal in the electric drivetrain that seals off the coolant system from the electric motor. NHTSA’s full summary ↓

Mercedes-Benz filed this with NHTSA as a service bulletin dated Oct 25, 2024, received Nov 5, 2024, about the power train. It names 15 model years (2016–2024). A service bulletin is not a safety recall: it is the manufacturer telling its dealers how to diagnose or repair a condition, and whether the work is paid for depends on the warranty in force. Quoting the number at a service desk can save a diagnosis.

What the bulletin says

Source: NHTSA's summary of the manufacturer's communication

Complaint: Noises when reversing slowly <5 km/h (squeaking) Cause: There is a seal in the electric drivetrain that seals off the coolant system from the electric motor. This seal is moistened with coolant during forward travel. As a result of the change in rotational direction when reversing slowly, it may be the case that this sealing ring is no longer moistened. Squeaking noises may occur as a result of the so-called "stick-slip effect". This behavior does not impact the function or durability of the sealing ring and electric drivetrain. Remedy: Do not replace any parts. Explain the cause of the noises to the customer.

The summary is NHTSA’s abstract of the document, as filed under 49 CFR 579.5. One communication is usually filed as several documents — the bulletin, a dealer notice, an owner letter — and the number on any of them finds this page. A PDF link is shown only once NHTSA’s own server has been seen to serve that document; the rest are checked over the following nights. Quote the number at a service desk; it is what the dealer’s system is keyed on.

What owners reported

Source: NHTSA complaint database

Owners of the 14 model years this bulletin names have filed 597 complaints with NHTSA since 2015. 54 of them name Power Train — the same broad component group this bulletin is filed under. NHTSA groups complaints coarsely, so that means the same area of the vehicle, not necessarily the same fault.

On the 2019 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, the 14 owners who gave an odometer reading for Power Train reported it at a median of 24,000 miles. That figure is one model year’s, not the whole range this bulletin covers — medians from different model years are not averaged.

At high altitudes (it's happened over 5000ft and not under that) while in 4x4 mode, the car occasionally just simply does not respond to throttle input while in drive. This is usually from a start while shifting from park or reverse into drive, but there is zero power which has now been dangerous a few times for us while on inclines or…

The High-Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP) and corresponding fuel delivery pressure regulator/sensors have suffered an internal mechanical failure. The system intermittently fails to maintain commanded rail pressure, leading to critical engine cylinder misfires (P0302, P0304) and severe long-term fuel adaptation breaches (P00C600, P008992…

This vehicle with 19711 mileage was parked in the driveway. The engine started normally, but a red error message stated, "Service Required Do Not Shift Gears Visit Dealer". I contacted the local dealership and Mercedes Roadside Assistance was not able to reset the software.

A complaint is one owner’s account, not a defect finding, and a bulletin is not a recall. Nothing here says this bulletin was issued because of these complaints, or that the repair it describes fixed them. Complaint files on this site begin in 2015.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR 579.5

Is Mercedes-Benz LI08.10-N-078545 a recall?

No. A service bulletin is a manufacturer communication filed with NHTSA under 49 CFR 579.5; a safety recall carries an NHTSA campaign number (two digits, a letter, six digits) and a federal duty to repair for free. Check the vehicle’s recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or on its page here.

Is the LI08.10-N-078545 repair free?

Not automatically. A service bulletin describes how to diagnose or repair a condition; who pays depends on the warranty in force, any extension, and the dealer. Quoting the number can save a diagnosis either way. Every Mercedes-Benz warranty extension on file lists the ones Mercedes-Benz has filed.

Which vehicles does LI08.10-N-078545 cover?

The manufacturer filed it against 15 model years: 2023 Mercedes-Benz Metris, 2022 Mercedes-Benz Metris, 2021 Mercedes-Benz Metris, 2020 Mercedes-Benz Metris, 2019 Mercedes-Benz Metris, 2018 Mercedes-Benz Metris and more. Whether one particular vehicle is affected is a matter of its VIN and its build, not its model year alone.
