Mazda bulletin SA-039-23

What it saysSome vehicles may experience exterior trim heat damage when parked near a glass building or Low-E windows. NHTSA’s full summary ↓

Mazda filed this with NHTSA as a service bulletin dated Jul 6, 2023, received Aug 5, 2023, about the structure. It names 57 model years (2016–2024). A service bulletin is not a safety recall: it is the manufacturer telling its dealers how to diagnose or repair a condition, and whether the work is paid for depends on the warranty in force. Quoting the number at a service desk can save a diagnosis.

The summary is NHTSA’s abstract of the document, as filed under 49 CFR 579.5. One communication is usually filed as several documents — the bulletin, a dealer notice, an owner letter — and the number on any of them finds this page. A PDF link is shown only once NHTSA’s own server has been seen to serve that document; the rest are checked over the following nights. Quote the number at a service desk; it is what the dealer’s system is keyed on.

What owners reported

Source: NHTSA complaint database

Owners of the 51 model years this bulletin names have filed 3,734 complaints with NHTSA since 2015. 15 of them name Structure — the same broad component group this bulletin is filed under. NHTSA groups complaints coarsely, so that means the same area of the vehicle, not necessarily the same fault.

Keyless Entry: I have had this vehicle for about 6 months and over that time, more than 3 separate times the keyless entry hasn't unlocked. It may take 2 - 3 tries. It has never failed to eventually unlock. I don't know that it ever failed to lock because approaching the car it would have already been unlocked.

2023 Mazda CX-50 · Structure · filed with NHTSA Feb 20, 2024 · ODI 11572935

I AM noticing excessive paint chips on the hood and front fenders of my 2017 Mazda 3. The paint is: soul red crystal paint. I have not noticed or heard road debris hit the car. The car has about 23000 miles. The paint seems very thin. I have noticed other Mazda owners with this paint having similar issues.

2017 Mazda Mazda3 · Structure · filed with NHTSA Sep 27, 2019 · ODI 11258570

At 60 MPH on the interstate, the sunroof shattered loudly, with broken glass pushed upward. The sunroof was open in the vent position. No evidence of outside force, such as a rock, causing the damage. Only 600 miles on the new car. After dealer intially denied a warranty claim, it was fixed under warranty

2016 Mazda Mazda6 · Structure · filed with NHTSA Jul 9, 2016 · ODI 10883742

A complaint is one owner’s account, not a defect finding, and a bulletin is not a recall. Nothing here says this bulletin was issued because of these complaints, or that the repair it describes fixed them. Complaint files on this site begin in 2015.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR 579.5

Is Mazda SA-039-23 a recall?

No. A service bulletin is a manufacturer communication filed with NHTSA under 49 CFR 579.5; a safety recall carries an NHTSA campaign number (two digits, a letter, six digits) and a federal duty to repair for free. Check the vehicle’s recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or on its page here.

Is the SA-039-23 repair free?

Not automatically. A service bulletin describes how to diagnose or repair a condition; who pays depends on the warranty in force, any extension, and the dealer. Quoting the number can save a diagnosis either way. Every Mazda warranty extension on file lists the ones Mazda has filed.

Which vehicles does SA-039-23 cover?

The manufacturer filed it against 57 model years: 2021 Mazda CX-3, 2020 Mazda CX-3, 2019 Mazda CX-3, 2018 Mazda CX-3, 2017 Mazda CX-3, 2016 Mazda CX-3 and more. Whether one particular vehicle is affected is a matter of its VIN and its build, not its model year alone.
