Volvo bulletin 37148

What it saysThis is a Technical Journal: CEL with DTC ECM P001100, P001200, P001400, P001500. NHTSA’s full summary ↓

Volvo filed this with NHTSA as a service bulletin dated Oct 10, 2025, received Jul 9, 2025, about the engine — 5 documents under this number. It names 40 model years (2021–2026). A service bulletin is not a safety recall: it is the manufacturer telling its dealers how to diagnose or repair a condition, and whether the work is paid for depends on the warranty in force. Quoting the number at a service desk can save a diagnosis.

The summary is NHTSA’s abstract of the document, as filed under 49 CFR 579.5. One communication is usually filed as several documents — the bulletin, a dealer notice, an owner letter — and the number on any of them finds this page. A PDF link is shown only once NHTSA’s own server has been seen to serve that document; the rest are checked over the following nights. Quote the number at a service desk; it is what the dealer’s system is keyed on.

What owners reported

Source: NHTSA complaint database

Owners of the 40 model years this bulletin names have filed 679 complaints with NHTSA since 2015. 31 of them name Engine — the same broad component group this bulletin is filed under. NHTSA groups complaints coarsely, so that means the same area of the vehicle, not necessarily the same fault.

The contact owns a 2026 Volvo XC90 PHEV. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, there was an abnormal odor inside the vehicle. No warning lights were illuminated. The contact refused to drive the vehicle due to the abnormal odor. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer.

What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The front warning collision comes on when a car is not even close. Engine, a part in the engine area has been replaced twice. Transmission, not shifting properly when 2/3. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk?

2022 Volvo S60 · Engine · filed with NHTSA Mar 7, 2024 · ODI 11576108

The ERAD (Electric Rear Axle Drive) transmission on my 2021 XC90 T8 Recharge has suffered an internal failure at approximately 112,550 miles. The vehicle makes loud grinding and slamming noises from the rear drivetrain and locks up when attempting to drive, making the vehicle completely undrivable.

A complaint is one owner’s account, not a defect finding, and a bulletin is not a recall. Nothing here says this bulletin was issued because of these complaints, or that the repair it describes fixed them. Complaint files on this site begin in 2015.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR 579.5

Is Volvo 37148 a recall?

No. A service bulletin is a manufacturer communication filed with NHTSA under 49 CFR 579.5; a safety recall carries an NHTSA campaign number (two digits, a letter, six digits) and a federal duty to repair for free. Check the vehicle’s recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or on its page here.

Is the 37148 repair free?

Not automatically. A service bulletin describes how to diagnose or repair a condition; who pays depends on the warranty in force, any extension, and the dealer. Quoting the number can save a diagnosis either way.

Which vehicles does 37148 cover?

The manufacturer filed it against 40 model years: 2025 Volvo S60, 2024 Volvo S60, 2023 Volvo S60, 2022 Volvo S60, 2021 Volvo S60, 2026 Volvo S90 and more. Whether one particular vehicle is affected is a matter of its VIN and its build, not its model year alone.
