Volkswagen bulletin V4521012062957-4

What it saysTo ensure that the customer is familiar with the various Driver Assist systems and the system limitations via the owners manual and videos available at knowyourvw.com. NHTSA’s full summary ↓

Volkswagen filed this with NHTSA as a service bulletin dated Dec 18, 2023, received Jan 4, 2024, about the equipment. It names 37 model years (2018–2024). A service bulletin is not a safety recall: it is the manufacturer telling its dealers how to diagnose or repair a condition, and whether the work is paid for depends on the warranty in force. Quoting the number at a service desk can save a diagnosis.

The summary is NHTSA’s abstract of the document, as filed under 49 CFR 579.5. One communication is usually filed as several documents — the bulletin, a dealer notice, an owner letter — and the number on any of them finds this page. A PDF link is shown only once NHTSA’s own server has been seen to serve that document; the rest are checked over the following nights. Quote the number at a service desk; it is what the dealer’s system is keyed on.

What owners reported

Source: NHTSA complaint database

Owners of the 37 model years this bulletin names have filed 6,031 complaints with NHTSA since 2015. 1,712 of them name Electrical System — the same broad component group this bulletin is filed under. NHTSA groups complaints coarsely, so that means the same area of the vehicle, not necessarily the same fault.

On the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas, the 66 owners who gave an odometer reading for Electrical System reported it at a median of 19,000 miles. That figure is one model year’s, not the whole range this bulletin covers — medians from different model years are not averaged.

To start, have requested the vehicle paperwork many times and the dealership has failed to give me a copy. The real problem started when i took my EV to get checked as the battery was not lasting long, they said it was normal, took it again as it stopped charging on type 1 and 2 chargers, they now said it was the Onboard charging module.

I took possession of this vehicle on 7/08/2022 and have had multiple problems with the infotainment ctr, cruise control, homelink, wireless charging pad, etc. However the most serious problem occurred on 08/27 when while sitting at a stop light on a downward hill ( I was the front car with a line of vehicles behind me ) while attempting…

2022 Volkswagen Tiguan · Electrical System · filed with NHTSA Sep 16, 2022

Carnet in-car system doesn't work. Brought home the new 2019 Tiguan with only 5 miles on it and when I pushed the carnet buttons....nothing. Contacted the dealer and the service department took two days to try to fix it. I was told there was no fix. It's a software problem and VW must come up with a fix. Over 2 months later, still fix.

2019 Volkswagen Tiguan · Electrical System · filed with NHTSA Aug 7, 2019

A complaint is one owner’s account, not a defect finding, and a bulletin is not a recall. Nothing here says this bulletin was issued because of these complaints, or that the repair it describes fixed them. Complaint files on this site begin in 2015.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR 579.5

Is Volkswagen V4521012062957-4 a recall?

No. A service bulletin is a manufacturer communication filed with NHTSA under 49 CFR 579.5; a safety recall carries an NHTSA campaign number (two digits, a letter, six digits) and a federal duty to repair for free. Check the vehicle’s recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or on its page here.

Is the V4521012062957-4 repair free?

Not automatically. A service bulletin describes how to diagnose or repair a condition; who pays depends on the warranty in force, any extension, and the dealer. Quoting the number can save a diagnosis either way.

Which vehicles does V4521012062957-4 cover?

The manufacturer filed it against 37 model years: 2024 Volkswagen Arteon, 2023 Volkswagen Arteon, 2022 Volkswagen Arteon, 2021 Volkswagen Arteon, 2020 Volkswagen Arteon, 2019 Volkswagen Arteon and more. Whether one particular vehicle is affected is a matter of its VIN and its build, not its model year alone.
