Mercedes-Benz filed this with NHTSA as a service bulletin dated Apr 16, 2026, received Nov 11, 2024, about the electrical system — 6 documents under this number. It names 34 model years (2020–2026). A service bulletin is not a safety recall: it is the manufacturer telling its dealers how to diagnose or repair a condition, and whether the work is paid for depends on the warranty in force. Quoting the number at a service desk can save a diagnosis.

What the bulletin says

Complaint - Engine diagnosis indicator lamp (MIL) lights up. - Current and saved fault code in DCCU and powertrain control unit (PTCU): P2E9873 The position sensor of the external socket flap of the vehicle socket (direct current) indicates an electrical fault. The actuator does not open. - The vehicle starts or charges normally and without any problems. Cause Software in the control unit "N116/5 - DC charge-connection unit (DCCU)". Remedy For model series 167, 254 (Only for USA): • Remedy is available: • Update software for N116/5 (DC charging control unit box) and perform SCN coding of N116/5. • Once the SCN coding has been updated, the engine diagnosis indicator lamp (MIL) is no longer actuated with this fault code. For Model Series 214: • Ensure N116/5 DCDC has latest software. • Perform SCN coding of the PTCU controller. • If MIL is still active, please open TIPS case and send to Body/Chassis/Entertainment inbox. For other model series: • Work on the SW remedy for N116/5 (DC charging control unit box) is in progress. • Once the software is available, update the software for N116/5 and perform SCN coding of N116/5. • If this problem occurs, the vehicle start or charging functions are normally not affected; therefore do not replace any parts. • Replacing parts does not solve this problem.

The summary is NHTSA’s abstract of the document, as filed under 49 CFR 579.5. One communication is usually filed as several documents — the bulletin, a dealer notice, an owner letter — and the number on any of them finds this page. A PDF link is shown only once NHTSA’s own server has been seen to serve that document; the rest are checked over the following nights. Quote the number at a service desk; it is what the dealer’s system is keyed on.

What owners reported

Source: NHTSA complaint database

Owners of the 29 model years this bulletin names have filed 1,017 complaints with NHTSA since 2015. 595 of them name Electrical System, Engine, Power Train — the same broad component group this bulletin is filed under. NHTSA groups complaints coarsely, so that means the same area of the vehicle, not necessarily the same fault.

On the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class, the 13 owners who gave an odometer reading for Electrical System reported it at a median of 6,615 miles. That figure is one model year’s, not the whole range this bulletin covers — medians from different model years are not averaged.

2026 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class · Engine · filed with NHTSA Jan 6, 2026 · ODI 11709067

I am reporting a recurring transmission/drivability issue with my 2024 Mercedes-Benz S580. The vehicle has been experiencing a harsh, abnormal shift between approximately 3rd and 4th gear at around 25–35 mph during normal acceleration. The shift feels like a sudden jerk or hesitation and does not feel consistent with normal operation.

2024 Mercedes-Benz S-Class · Power Train · filed with NHTSA Feb 20, 2026 · ODI 11719416

The digital instrument cluster and center infotainment display screen went completely black and blank while the vehicle was in motion. This immediate failure blinded the driver to critical safety telemetry, including the current vehicle speed, gear positioning, and active safety warning telltales, creating an immediate, severe crash…

2025 Mercedes-Benz E-Class · Electrical System · filed with NHTSA Jun 23, 2026 · ODI 11746077

A complaint is one owner’s account, not a defect finding, and a bulletin is not a recall. Nothing here says this bulletin was issued because of these complaints, or that the repair it describes fixed them. Complaint files on this site begin in 2015.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR 579.5

Is Mercedes-Benz LI47.70-P-078563 a recall?

No. A service bulletin is a manufacturer communication filed with NHTSA under 49 CFR 579.5; a safety recall carries an NHTSA campaign number (two digits, a letter, six digits) and a federal duty to repair for free. Check the vehicle’s recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or on its page here.

Is the LI47.70-P-078563 repair free?

Not automatically. A service bulletin describes how to diagnose or repair a condition; who pays depends on the warranty in force, any extension, and the dealer. Quoting the number can save a diagnosis either way. Every Mercedes-Benz warranty extension on file lists the ones Mercedes-Benz has filed.

Which vehicles does LI47.70-P-078563 cover?

The manufacturer filed it against 34 model years: 2025 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT, 2024 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT, 2026 Mercedes-Benz C-Class, 2025 Mercedes-Benz C-Class, 2024 Mercedes-Benz C-Class, 2023 Mercedes-Benz C-Class and more. Whether one particular vehicle is affected is a matter of its VIN and its build, not its model year alone.
