Honda Odyssey fuel system problems, 2016–2027

375 of the 3,662 complaints owners filed with NHTSA about the Honda Odyssey 2016–2027 name the fuel system (NHTSA’s “Fuel/Propulsion System” heading — fuel tanks, lines, pumps and injection — and on an EV, the propulsion battery and motors). The loudest years: 2019 (187), 2018 (106), 2020 (31). Filed under the same heading across these years: 6 manufacturer bulletins, 4 recall campaigns. Every figure is a linked federal record; none is a failure rate, none a repair cost, and none a verdict on one car.

Two things the counts carry that are not the car: how many of each year were sold, and how long each has been on the road — an older year out-counts a newer one before anything is wrong with it. The share column is the honest comparison across years: what part of that year’s complaints named the fuel system. Nothing here is a rate.

In owners’ own words

Filed with NHTSA by the people who own these cars, about the fuel system, from the model years with the most to say. Quoted as written, with anything identifying removed; unverified reports — what was said, not a finding that it was true.

Under certain conditions, the accelerator pedals fails to provide propulsion when depressed. The most common scenario in which this happens is when leaving a parking area and proceeding onto a roadway, especially if the parking area is elevated above the street slightly.

On June 16, 2023 When I got in my van and turned on, about 8 different system failure lights started singing and light up across my dashboard. I proceeded to drive it and it drove fine most of the time but then it would misfire or loose power. I took to a mechanic who plugged unit to read all the codes it was displaying.

I am having the problem with the Honda fuel injector system causing warning lights to go off. This has been a problem for 3 months and I’ve been told that there is a major supply issue. The problem has gotten so bad that my car keeps going into limp mode bc the transmission warning light is forced on. This is a safety issue

Our van regularly hesitates when to accelerate from a stop. Example, when turning right on red pushing the gas pedal will provide some speed to get into the roadway, then it becomes unresponsive. Letting up and pushing the accelerator will cause the van to move again after about.5 to 1 seconds.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA complaint database, recalls and manufacturer communications

Which Honda Odyssey years have the most fuel system complaints?

2019, 187; 2018, 106; 2020, 31. Raw counts, and an older year has had longer to collect them; by share of each year's own complaints the loudest is the 2019 (19%).

Is there a recall for the fuel system on the Honda Odyssey?

Yes — 4 campaigns are filed under this heading across these model years: 23V858000 (2023), 21V215000 (2019), 21V010000 (2021), 16V417000 (2016). A recall is matched by VIN, and applies to specific years; check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

When do fuel system problems show up on the Honda Odyssey?

Owners who gave an odometer reading reported it at a median of 65,000 miles across the model years; half of them between 35,000 and 85,000. That is when reports cluster, not the life of a part.

What does NHTSA's "Fuel/Propulsion System" heading cover?

Fuel tanks, lines, pumps and injection — and on an EV, the propulsion battery and motors. Owners choose the heading when they file, so it says which area of the vehicle the complaint is about, not which part failed.
