Nissan bulletin NTB17-003F

What it saysFluid leak caused by transfer assembly right side drive shaft OIL seal this bulletin has been amended. NHTSA’s full summary ↓

Nissan filed this with NHTSA as a service bulletin dated Dec 13, 2023, received Jan 9, 2024, about the power train. It names 32 model years (2016–2024). A service bulletin is not a safety recall: it is the manufacturer telling its dealers how to diagnose or repair a condition, and whether the work is paid for depends on the warranty in force. Quoting the number at a service desk can save a diagnosis.

The summary is NHTSA’s abstract of the document, as filed under 49 CFR 579.5. One communication is usually filed as several documents — the bulletin, a dealer notice, an owner letter — and the number on any of them finds this page. A PDF link is shown only once NHTSA’s own server has been seen to serve that document; the rest are checked over the following nights. Quote the number at a service desk; it is what the dealer’s system is keyed on.

Also filed against model years this site has no page for: 2022 Nissan Redundant Altima; 2023 Nissan Redundant Altima.

A vehicle page’s bulletin list shows the newest few communications filed against that model year; the count there is every one.

What owners reported

Source: NHTSA complaint database

Owners of the 30 model years this bulletin names have filed 5,339 complaints with NHTSA since 2015. 682 of them name Power Train — the same broad component group this bulletin is filed under. NHTSA groups complaints coarsely, so that means the same area of the vehicle, not necessarily the same fault.

On the 2016 Nissan Rogue, the 87 owners who gave an odometer reading for Power Train reported it at a median of 75,000 miles. That figure is one model year’s, not the whole range this bulletin covers — medians from different model years are not averaged.

This has been an on going issue with this vehicle where it will cut out start to shutter or is lurching as driving on the road has happened when coming off a stop sign and coming up to 25 mph, has happened when driving on the interstate at 75 to 80 mph, will normally come back to normal operations, has been into the dealership a number…

2020 Nissan Pathfinder · Power Train · filed with NHTSA Jul 18, 2024

I have experienced sudden acceleration, and sudden stalling on the highway, cobb pkwy, and at a zaxby's restaurant when I was driving my car on four or more occasions. I almost hit a car last week when my car suddenly accelerated. I steered my car to the right next to a curb to avoid a collision. I almost got hit by a car on cobb pkwy.

2019 Nissan Rogue Sport · Power Train · filed with NHTSA May 10, 2021

It has happened twice since we purchased our Murano 8 months ago. When pulling onto a divided highway you have to slow down then you accelerate to get into the lane....the transmission hesitates around 2 or 3 seconds then grabs the gear and you take off. This is very worrysome for us, both being retired and it could cause an accident

2020 Nissan Murano · Power Train · filed with NHTSA Apr 13, 2023

A complaint is one owner’s account, not a defect finding, and a bulletin is not a recall. Nothing here says this bulletin was issued because of these complaints, or that the repair it describes fixed them. Complaint files on this site begin in 2015.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR 579.5

Is Nissan NTB17-003F a recall?

No. A service bulletin is a manufacturer communication filed with NHTSA under 49 CFR 579.5; a safety recall carries an NHTSA campaign number (two digits, a letter, six digits) and a federal duty to repair for free. Check the vehicle’s recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or on its page here.

Is the NTB17-003F repair free?

Not automatically. A service bulletin describes how to diagnose or repair a condition; who pays depends on the warranty in force, any extension, and the dealer. Quoting the number can save a diagnosis either way.

Which vehicles does NTB17-003F cover?

The manufacturer filed it against 32 model years: 2024 Nissan Altima, 2021 Nissan Altima, 2020 Nissan Altima, 2019 Nissan Altima, 2024 Nissan Murano, 2023 Nissan Murano and more. Whether one particular vehicle is affected is a matter of its VIN and its build, not its model year alone.
