Ram 2500 engine problems, 2016–2026

316 of the 4,388 complaints owners filed with NHTSA about the Ram 2500 2016–2026 name the engine (NHTSA’s “Engine” heading — the engine and its cooling system). The loudest years: 2016 (60), 2017 (48), 2018 (42). Filed under the same heading across these years: 10 manufacturer bulletins, 3 recall campaigns. Every figure is a linked federal record; none is a failure rate, none a repair cost, and none a verdict on one car.

Two things the counts carry that are not the car: how many of each year were sold, and how long each has been on the road — an older year out-counts a newer one before anything is wrong with it. The share column is the honest comparison across years: what part of that year’s complaints named the engine. Nothing here is a rate.

In owners’ own words

Filed with NHTSA by the people who own these cars, about the engine, from the model years with the most to say. Quoted as written, with anything identifying removed; unverified reports — what was said, not a finding that it was true.

I feel I my complain is on par with so many others with a newer Ram diesel. The dead pedal. I have nearly been hit more than 5 times now on several....several occasions due to no immediate acceleration at a light crossing an intersection, or going on the highway, switching lanes and trying to accelerate again.
Engine Jul 5, 2017 NHTSA owner report
Dead accelerator pedal. If driving with steady pedal and let up on accelerator pedal and then step back on the accurate, the truck doesn't move/no response for 5-10 seconds, then the truck speeds off. Happens numerous times.
Engine at 4,800 miles Jun 1, 2017 NHTSA owner report
The throttle is not responding. It is accelerating on its own. During regular driving the vehicle accelerates on its own. This happens at all speeds. And continued to accelerate during braking. In addition there are 2 potentially life threatening recalls on this vehicle that have no remedies

Engine at 34,000 miles Feb 14, 2020 NHTSA owner report
The brake anti lock warning light comes on intermittently causing cruise control to be turned off. Yes it can be inspected. I feel this is a safety issue when driving at highway speeds

Common questions

Source: NHTSA complaint database, recalls and manufacturer communications

Which Ram 2500 years have the most engine complaints?

2016, 60; 2017, 48; 2018, 42. Raw counts, and an older year has had longer to collect them; by share of each year's own complaints the loudest is the 2021 (26%).

Is there a recall for the engine on the Ram 2500?

Yes — 3 campaigns are filed under this heading across these model years: 22V642000 (2022), 17V562000 (2017), 15V592000 (2016). A recall is matched by VIN, and applies to specific years; check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

When do engine problems show up on the Ram 2500?

Owners who gave an odometer reading reported it at a median of 24,000 miles across the model years; half of them between 6,000 and 72,000. That is when reports cluster, not the life of a part.

What does NHTSA's "Engine" heading cover?

The engine and its cooling system. Owners choose the heading when they file, so it says which area of the vehicle the complaint is about, not which part failed.
