905 of the 4,149 complaints owners filed with NHTSA about the Jeep Grand Cherokee 2016–2027 name the engine (NHTSA’s “Engine” heading — the engine and its cooling system). Every figure is a linked federal record; none is a failure rate, none a repair cost, and none a verdict on one car.

Two things the counts carry that are not the car: how many of each year were sold, and how long each has been on the road — an older year out-counts a newer one before anything is wrong with it. The share column is the honest comparison across years: what part of that year’s complaints named the engine. Nothing here is a rate.

Filed with NHTSA by the people who own these cars, about the engine, from the model years with the most to say. Quoted as written, with anything identifying removed; unverified reports — what was said, not a finding that it was true.

When stopped at a light car stalled, start stop pressed after car places in park and car ran. Automatic off error lit up on screen in yellow and remained on despite turning off automatic off.
Engine at 20,526 miles Apr 13, 2019 NHTSA owner report
My 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee just accelerated by itself up a sidewalk at a parking lot and ran into the pillar of a building. I then put it in reverse and it accelerated into a car parked beside me. The front axle snapped completely even though the impact was not tremendous. The air bag did not deploy.

The contact owns a 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee L. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, there was an abnormal hissing and tapping sound coming from the engine compartment, with the check engine warning light illuminated.
Engine at 3,332 miles Dec 18, 2025 NHTSA owner report
I am leasing this vehicle for 3 more years. This vehicle has been nothing but trouble since day 1. Last winter it stopped running on the interstate during a blizzard and I had to coast in traffic to the side of the highway.
Engine Dec 9, 2025 NHTSA owner report
The starter/starter solenoid and related engine oil sealing have failed three times. Most recently on 6/18/2026, and previously in 2024 and 2025, the vehicle would not start: the dashboard illuminated but the engine would not crank. The engine then began smoking and a burning electrical smell entered the cabin.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA complaint database, recalls and manufacturer communications

Which Jeep Grand Cherokee years have the most engine complaints?

2018, 141; 2024, 123; 2023, 114. Raw counts, and an older year has had longer to collect them; by share of each year's own complaints the loudest is the 2026 (71%).

Is there a recall for the engine on the Jeep Grand Cherokee?

Yes — 7 campaigns are filed under this heading across these model years: 25V766000 (2025), 24V926000 (2024), 23V412000 (2022), 23V411000 (2020). A recall is matched by VIN, and applies to specific years; check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

When do engine problems show up on the Jeep Grand Cherokee?

Owners who gave an odometer reading reported it at a median of 26,572 miles across the model years; half of them between 10,000 and 64,000. That is when reports cluster, not the life of a part.

What does NHTSA's "Engine" heading cover?

The engine and its cooling system. Owners choose the heading when they file, so it says which area of the vehicle the complaint is about, not which part failed.
