Mazda bulletin SA-040-25

What it saysA New Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF-A7) is being used for some 2023-2026 models. NHTSA’s full summary ↓

Mazda filed this with NHTSA as a service bulletin dated Aug 27, 2025, received Sep 5, 2025, about the power train. It names 16 model years (2023–2026). A service bulletin is not a safety recall: it is the manufacturer telling its dealers how to diagnose or repair a condition, and whether the work is paid for depends on the warranty in force. Quoting the number at a service desk can save a diagnosis.

What the bulletin says

Source: NHTSA's summary of the manufacturer's communication

A New Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF-A7) is being used for some 2023-2026 models. ATF-A7 is an extremely low viscosity formulation with low friction to achieve best-in-class fuel economy and driving performance. For easy identification, ATF-A7 is colored Red and ATF-FZ is colored Blue. There is NO interchangeability between ATF-A7 and ATF-FZ. For CX-30, Mazda3, and CX-5, some 2.5L and all 2.5T engines still use ATF-FZ. Verify the type of ATF according to what is in MGSS (TRANSMISSION/TRANSAXLE TECHNICAL DATA) or what is marked on the dipstick (see below).

The summary is NHTSA’s abstract of the document, as filed under 49 CFR 579.5. One communication is usually filed as several documents — the bulletin, a dealer notice, an owner letter — and the number on any of them finds this page. A PDF link is shown only once NHTSA’s own server has been seen to serve that document; the rest are checked over the following nights. Quote the number at a service desk; it is what the dealer’s system is keyed on.

What owners reported

Source: NHTSA complaint database

Owners of the 16 model years this bulletin names have filed 751 complaints with NHTSA since 2015. 45 of them name Power Train — the same broad component group this bulletin is filed under. NHTSA groups complaints coarsely, so that means the same area of the vehicle, not necessarily the same fault.

My car is literally stalling out on me. It started by sputtering when I put my foot on the gas a week or so ago. Then today It literally started just losing power while driving. It’s not throwing any codes but that’s super dangerous and this car is only a year old. I am extremely concerned for my safety

2025 Mazda CX-90 · Power Train · filed with NHTSA Jul 4, 2026

Transmission failure when driving. Car was towed to dealership and diagnosed. Transmission and torque converter replacement required under factory warranty. Very long lead time for dealer to acquire replacement parts, about 4 months

2023 Mazda Mazda3 · Power Train · filed with NHTSA Mar 13, 2026

left-most lane of a three-lane highway, I pressed the accelerator to maintain the flow of traffic. The vehicle suddenly began revving between 4,000–5,000 RPM without increasing speed.

2024 Mazda Mazda3 · Power Train · filed with NHTSA Feb 19, 2026

A complaint is one owner’s account, not a defect finding, and a bulletin is not a recall. Nothing here says this bulletin was issued because of these complaints, or that the repair it describes fixed them. Complaint files on this site begin in 2015.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR 579.5

Is Mazda SA-040-25 a recall?

No. A service bulletin is a manufacturer communication filed with NHTSA under 49 CFR 579.5; a safety recall carries an NHTSA campaign number (two digits, a letter, six digits) and a federal duty to repair for free. Check the vehicle’s recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or on its page here.

Is the SA-040-25 repair free?

Not automatically. A service bulletin describes how to diagnose or repair a condition; who pays depends on the warranty in force, any extension, and the dealer. Quoting the number can save a diagnosis either way.

Which vehicles does SA-040-25 cover?

The manufacturer filed it against 16 model years: 2026 Mazda CX-30, 2025 Mazda CX-30, 2024 Mazda CX-30, 2023 Mazda CX-30, 2026 Mazda CX-5, 2025 Mazda CX-5 and more. Whether one particular vehicle is affected is a matter of its VIN and its build, not its model year alone.
