Mazda bulletin SA-035-26
What it saysDESCRIPTION When refueling, you may occasionally notice: A gurgling sound from the fuel filler neck. NHTSA’s full summary ↓
Mazda filed this with NHTSA as a service bulletin dated May 20, 2026, received Jun 4, 2026, about the fuel/propulsion system. It names 5 model years (2024–2026). A service bulletin is not a safety recall: it is the manufacturer telling its dealers how to diagnose or repair a condition, and whether the work is paid for depends on the warranty in force. Quoting the number at a service desk can save a diagnosis.

What the bulletin says
Source: NHTSA's summary of the manufacturer's communicationDESCRIPTION When refueling, you may occasionally notice: A gurgling sound from the fuel filler neck. The gas dispenser nozzle clicks off before the tank is full. Fuel vapor or mist from the filler neck. This can occur if 20 minutes have elapsed after pressing the fuel lid button and the fuel tank has resealed the Vapor Recovery System (VRS) before refueling is complete. Before Refueling: 1. Press the fuel-filler lid opener switch. The system will release pressure in the tank through the vapor recovery system (charcoal canister) and enter Refueling Mode. You’ll see “Ready to Refuel” displayed on the instrument cluster. 2. You now have 20 minutes to complete refueling. After 20 minutes, or if the vehicle is turned to “READY ON,” the tank will automatically reseal the vapor recovery system. If the tank vapor recovery system has resealed, you may notice: The gas pump despenser clicks off before the tank is full. A gurgling sound from the filler neck. Fuel vapor or liquid may spit back from the filler neck. If this happens: 1. Press the fuel-filler lid switch again. 2. Wait until the instrument cluster displays “Ready to Refuel.” 3.Continue refueling.

The summary is NHTSA’s abstract of the document, as filed under 49 CFR 579.5. One communication is usually filed as several documents — the bulletin, a dealer notice, an owner letter — and the number on any of them finds this page. A PDF link is shown only once NHTSA’s own server has been seen to serve that document; the rest are checked over the following nights. Quote the number at a service desk; it is what the dealer’s system is keyed on.

What owners reported
Source: NHTSA complaint databaseOwners of the 5 model years this bulletin names have filed 587 complaints with NHTSA since 2015. 16 of them name Fuel/Propulsion System — the same broad component group this bulletin is filed under. NHTSA groups complaints coarsely, so that means the same area of the vehicle, not necessarily the same fault.
Recently, while driving our Mazda CX-90 (2025) we noticed a persistent and constant odor of fuel/gasoline vapors arise from the vehicle. We noticed this after driving the vehicle approximately 120 min from Las Vegas, NV to St. George, UT. The smell was intoxicating and nauseating.

A complaint is one owner’s account, not a defect finding, and a bulletin is not a recall. Nothing here says this bulletin was issued because of these complaints, or that the repair it describes fixed them. Complaint files on this site begin in 2015.

Common questions
Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR 579.5Is Mazda SA-035-26 a recall?
No. A service bulletin is a manufacturer communication filed with NHTSA under 49 CFR 579.5; a safety recall carries an NHTSA campaign number (two digits, a letter, six digits) and a federal duty to repair for free. Check the vehicle’s recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or on its page here.
Is the SA-035-26 repair free?
Not automatically. A service bulletin describes how to diagnose or repair a condition; who pays depends on the warranty in force, any extension, and the dealer. Quoting the number can save a diagnosis either way. Every Mazda warranty extension on file lists the ones Mazda has filed.
Which vehicles does SA-035-26 cover?
The manufacturer filed it against 5 model years: 2026 Mazda CX-70, 2025 Mazda CX-70, 2026 Mazda CX-90, 2025 Mazda CX-90, 2024 Mazda CX-90. Whether one particular vehicle is affected is a matter of its VIN and its build, not its model year alone.
