Volkswagen Atlas brake problems, 2018–2027

442 of the 2,473 complaints owners filed with NHTSA about the Volkswagen Atlas 2018–2027 name the brakes (NHTSA’s “Service Brakes” heading — the hydraulic brakes, ABS and brake assist). The loudest years: 2021 (131), 2019 (76), 2018 (75). Filed under the same heading across these years: 3 manufacturer bulletins, 5 recall campaigns. Every figure is a linked federal record; none is a failure rate, none a repair cost, and none a verdict on one car.

Two things the counts carry that are not the car: how many of each year were sold, and how long each has been on the road — an older year out-counts a newer one before anything is wrong with it. The share column is the honest comparison across years: what part of that year’s complaints named the brakes. Nothing here is a rate.

Service Brakes Apr 12, 2022 NHTSA owner report
Started with the driver door sensor not unlocking. Happened once before, errors and lights came on. Next day everything was fine. Yesterday, the driver door sensor would not unlock. All other doors unlocked, so I unlocked the driver door from the inside.
Service Brakes Apr 1, 2022 NHTSA owner report
Upon accelerating my 2019 VW Atlas down an empty street between 10 to 20 miles per hour the autonamous emergency brake sensor malfunctioned and the car suddenly came to a complete stop jolting US forward. It was so unexpected that my hands slipped off the steering wheel and landed on the dash board. The halt came with a very loud noise.

Emergency brake activated when the vehicle was in motion and turning towards an open parking space. Nothing was in front of the vehicle at the time of the emergency brake deploying. This left the vehicle stuck in the middle of parking lane and could have been hit by cross traffic
Service Brakes Sep 4, 2019 NHTSA owner report
The autonomous breaking system and pediatrian warning sensors are malfunctioning making my car unsafe to drive. Since it's purchase in january 2018, the brakes have locked up at least 10 times under normal driving conditions. I can re-create the problem when I AM moving slowly on an uneven road surface.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA complaint database, recalls and manufacturer communications

Which Volkswagen Atlas years have the most brake complaints?

2021, 131; 2019, 76; 2018, 75. Raw counts, and an older year has had longer to collect them; by share of each year's own complaints the loudest is the 2022 (27%).

Is there a recall for the brakes on the Volkswagen Atlas?

Yes — 5 campaigns are filed under this heading across these model years: 25V434000 (2025), 24V723000 (2024), 22V718000 (2023), 18V536000 (2018). A recall is matched by VIN, and applies to specific years; check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

When do brake problems show up on the Volkswagen Atlas?

Owners who gave an odometer reading reported it at a median of 10,000 miles across the model years; half of them between 4,000 and 23,000. That is when reports cluster, not the life of a part.

What does NHTSA's "Service Brakes" heading cover?

The hydraulic brakes, ABS and brake assist. Owners choose the heading when they file, so it says which area of the vehicle the complaint is about, not which part failed.
