Volkswagen Atlas fuel system problems, 2018–2027

175 of the 2,473 complaints owners filed with NHTSA about the Volkswagen Atlas 2018–2027 name the fuel system (NHTSA’s “Fuel/Propulsion System” heading — fuel tanks, lines, pumps and injection — and on an EV, the propulsion battery and motors). The loudest years: 2021 (59), 2019 (35), 2018 (35). Filed under the same heading across these years: 4 recall campaigns, 1 NHTSA investigation. Every figure is a linked federal record; none is a failure rate, none a repair cost, and none a verdict on one car.

Two things the counts carry that are not the car: how many of each year were sold, and how long each has been on the road — an older year out-counts a newer one before anything is wrong with it. The share column is the honest comparison across years: what part of that year’s complaints named the fuel system. Nothing here is a rate.

In owners’ own words

Filed with NHTSA by the people who own these cars, about the fuel system, from the model years with the most to say. Quoted as written, with anything identifying removed; unverified reports — what was said, not a finding that it was true.

The Car has Stalled at Stoplights 3 different times. There was a message on the dashboard that told me to "manually restart the engine". I put the car in park and restarted the engine. Note: I don't use the "Eco Stop Start" mode.

There is an error with the start-stop feature and it causes my car to stall while driving it. This is very dangerous considering it tells me to put it in park and start the car manually. It's almost caused me multiple accidents

Vehicles stalls randomly all the times ,moving or not . Almost got rear ended several times . Spent 3k at Vw in Brandon for brakes that were only 70k miles on them . But they still squeal . Can’t fuel with gas as the pressure just pushes the fuel back at me . Seems worse in warmer weather .
Fuel/Propulsion System Apr 23, 2025 NHTSA owner report
The car stalls when pulling out. We have had many close calls entering traffic and the car will not react to giving it gas. I’ve taken it to three dealers who all say it is not showing a code and they can’t get it to reproduce the problem. I bought the car new and it has less than 60,000 miles.
Fuel/Propulsion System Mar 14, 2025 NHTSA owner report
While driving on Saturday, Jan 8, 2022, my Atlas started leaking fuel. It felt like it just down-shifted on its own and the gas pedal stopped working. We were simultaneously overcome by the smell of gasoline inside the car. Both the engine and EPC warning lights were on.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA complaint database, recalls and manufacturer communications

Which Volkswagen Atlas years have the most fuel system complaints?

2021, 59; 2019, 35; 2018, 35. Raw counts, and an older year has had longer to collect them; by share of each year's own complaints the loudest is the 2023 (14%).

Is there a recall for the fuel system on the Volkswagen Atlas?

Yes — 4 campaigns are filed under this heading across these model years: 22V245000 (2022), 19V614000 (2019), 18V284000 (2018), 17V766000 (2018). A recall is matched by VIN, and applies to specific years; check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

When do fuel system problems show up on the Volkswagen Atlas?

Owners who gave an odometer reading reported it at a median of 32,000 miles across the model years; half of them between 14,000 and 75,000. That is when reports cluster, not the life of a part.

What does NHTSA's "Fuel/Propulsion System" heading cover?

Fuel tanks, lines, pumps and injection — and on an EV, the propulsion battery and motors. Owners choose the heading when they file, so it says which area of the vehicle the complaint is about, not which part failed.
