Chevrolet Traverse brake problems, 2016–2027
290 of the 2,366 complaints owners filed with NHTSA about the Chevrolet Traverse 2016–2027 name the brakes (NHTSA’s “Service Brakes” heading — the hydraulic brakes, ABS and brake assist). The loudest years: 2025 (114), 2024 (60), 2018 (37). Filed under the same heading across these years: 1 NHTSA investigation. Every figure is a linked federal record; none is a failure rate, none a repair cost, and none a verdict on one car.

Two things the counts carry that are not the car: how many of each year were sold, and how long each has been on the road — an older year out-counts a newer one before anything is wrong with it. The share column is the honest comparison across years: what part of that year’s complaints named the brakes. Nothing here is a rate.

In owners’ own words

The master brake cylinder failed around the 1600-mile mark. It seems to be occurring on 2025 Chevrolet Traverse and Buick Enclave models. GM has no ETA on replacement parts. I took it to a nearby dealer service center (Dave Kirk Chevrolet in Crossville, TN), and they diagnosed the issue.
Purchased new 25 Traverse. Driving from AR to OK, stopped at a store, parked car. Upon returning to car, start ignition and red "BRAKE" light illuminated as well as ABS, Traction control and forward collision icons all lit. "Service brake assist, service esc, rear auto brake and park assist unavailable" warnings all show on the dash.
My vehicles battery died, camera systems unavailable, cruising systems unavailable, breaking system breaker on clear highway at 55MPH with my kids in the back. The car is faulty!! 8+ months now waiting on a resolution! 7+ service visits now I’m being ignored!!
Brake on driver side front became super hot and started dragging causing the steering wheel to shake. Dealership stated calipers are fine need pins replaced. Pins on back order. In the meantime they cleaned the pins and re-lubed them and said I was good to go until the parts come in. 5 days later same exact thing.
Vehicle brake system failed allowing the pedal to travel to the floor. Only a small about of rear brake pressure allowed the vehicle to stop. Issue was discovered to be a failed master cylinder leaking all brake fluid into the brake booster, sucking in air causing brake failure.

2025, 114; 2024, 60; 2018, 37. Raw counts, and an older year has had longer to collect them; by share of each year's own complaints the loudest is the 2025 (64%).
Is there a recall for the brakes on the Chevrolet Traverse?
No recall campaign is filed under this heading on any of these model years. A bulletin is not a recall: it carries no federal duty to repair for free.
When do brake problems show up on the Chevrolet Traverse?
Owners who gave an odometer reading reported it at a median of 19,000 miles across the model years; half of them between 7,000 and 39,000. That is when reports cluster, not the life of a part.
What does NHTSA's "Service Brakes" heading cover?
The hydraulic brakes, ABS and brake assist. Owners choose the heading when they file, so it says which area of the vehicle the complaint is about, not which part failed.
