Toyota filed this with NHTSA as a service bulletin dated Feb 21, 2024, received Apr 1, 2024, about the engine. It names 15 model years (2018–2024). A service bulletin is not a safety recall: it is the manufacturer telling its dealers how to diagnose or repair a condition, and whether the work is paid for depends on the warranty in force. Quoting the number at a service desk can save a diagnosis.

The summary is NHTSA’s abstract of the document, as filed under 49 CFR 579.5. One communication is usually filed as several documents — the bulletin, a dealer notice, an owner letter — and the number on any of them finds this page. A PDF link is shown only once NHTSA’s own server has been seen to serve that document; the rest are checked over the following nights. Quote the number at a service desk; it is what the dealer’s system is keyed on.

What owners reported

Source: NHTSA complaint database

Owners of the 15 model years this bulletin names have filed 4,340 complaints with NHTSA since 2015. 846 of them name Engine — the same broad component group this bulletin is filed under. NHTSA groups complaints coarsely, so that means the same area of the vehicle, not necessarily the same fault.

On the 2018 Toyota Camry, the 68 owners who gave an odometer reading for Engine reported it at a median of 20,600 miles. That figure is one model year’s, not the whole range this bulletin covers — medians from different model years are not averaged.

I purchased the car last July. Up to December, the car performed fine. Starting in December when I used the car heater repeatedly due to subzero temperatures, I noticed a burning smell coming from the vents. I was afraid that the engine or car would catch fire. I called the Tansky Toyota dealership and was told to bring the car in.

2022 Toyota RAV4 · Engine · filed with NHTSA Apr 22, 2023 · ODI 11518482

Engine coolant smell after driving. Doesnt matter how long I drove, 10 minutes or 6 hours, smell is there. Smell is sronger from driver side. Dealership told me it just does that! That they let sit in the parking lot running for an hour and there was no leak. It only has 10k miles on it. It shouldn't reek of hot coolant at all!

2020 Toyota Camry · Engine · filed with NHTSA Sep 19, 2020 · ODI 11359920

I rented a 2019 Toyota Camry for 9 days. Many times while accelerating the engine lost power. It was especially dangerous when attempting turns in front of ongoing traffic. The car would start to go then just seem to die as I was making the turn. Then engine lights would come on and it would just start coasting.

A complaint is one owner’s account, not a defect finding, and a bulletin is not a recall. Nothing here says this bulletin was issued because of these complaints, or that the repair it describes fixed them. Complaint files on this site begin in 2015.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR 579.5

Is Toyota TSB001024 a recall?

No. A service bulletin is a manufacturer communication filed with NHTSA under 49 CFR 579.5; a safety recall carries an NHTSA campaign number (two digits, a letter, six digits) and a federal duty to repair for free. Check the vehicle’s recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or on its page here.

Is the TSB001024 repair free?

Not automatically. A service bulletin describes how to diagnose or repair a condition; who pays depends on the warranty in force, any extension, and the dealer. Quoting the number can save a diagnosis either way. Every Toyota warranty extension on file lists the ones Toyota has filed.

Which vehicles does TSB001024 cover?

The manufacturer filed it against 15 model years: 2022 Toyota Avalon, 2021 Toyota Avalon, 2024 Toyota Camry, 2023 Toyota Camry, 2022 Toyota Camry, 2021 Toyota Camry and more. Whether one particular vehicle is affected is a matter of its VIN and its build, not its model year alone.
