Mercedes-Benz bulletin LI42.10-P-080253

What it saysComplaint When coming to a stop or at slow speeds, brakes produce light squealing noise. NHTSA’s full summary ↓

Mercedes-Benz filed this with NHTSA as a service bulletin dated Sep 1, 2026, received Feb 28, 2026, about the service brakes — 4 documents under this number. It names 15 model years (2020–2027). A service bulletin is not a safety recall: it is the manufacturer telling its dealers how to diagnose or repair a condition, and whether the work is paid for depends on the warranty in force. Quoting the number at a service desk can save a diagnosis.

Complaint When coming to a stop or at slow speeds, brakes produce light squealing noise. Cause Optimized brake pads may produce some noise and is normal at low speeds and light pressure. If the noise begins when the weather is colder, brake noise during this time is normal and the below remedy will not rectify. Remedy NOTE: Exchanging brake discs for noise is not a permanent measure for noise mitigation and cannot be claimed under warranty according to this LI. If the brake pads have not been exchanged prior, vehicle is newer, and this is the first visit for brake noise: • Wipe down brake disc and remove any brake dust from holes in brake disc. • GLE ONLY ‑ Replace brake pads and spring clips. • Ensure the double sided adhesive is applied to all locations where the pistons contact the brake pad backing plate. See attachment "Adhesive and Copper Paste Application Area ‑ Series 167". • Apply Molykote to the sides of the brake pad backing plate in the location shown in the attachment "Adhesive and Copper Paste Application Area ‑ Series 167". • Clean brake components thoroughly from brake dust, road debris, and other foreign material. • After replacing, place the vehicle in sport or sport plus mode and engage brake pedal for 30 seconds. • Bed brakes during quality checking according to LI42.10‑P‑063502 but only perform once. If the brake pads have been exchanged in a prior visit: The following portion is not warrantable, some brake noise, especially with sport brake packages, is normal. The below is intended to assist in reducing or mitigating brake noise for customer satisfaction purposes. • Inspect the condition of the brake system per WIS. • Some level of noise is acceptable and cannot be mitigated or removed at all times. Below is a list of items that can cause or exacerbate noises but are normal. • With use there will be dirt, debris, brake dust, and other foreign contaminants. If the system is dirty, components should be thoroughly cleaned and wiped down. • Inspect the condition of the brake pads and discs. Note any visual anomalies such as glazing, excess rust formation, pad imprints from long stationary times, etc... • Driving styles. Does the noise only occur at very low speeds when coming to a stop such as with very light brake pressure? When coming to a stop and applying increased brake pressure, does the noise reduce or disappear? If so, this is norm

Read by machine from the document NHTSA serves (5 pages), read Oct 2, 2026. A part number is shown only where it matches Mercedes-Benz’s own catalogue shape, an operation only with its code and time, and a description only where the reader got it whole; anything it could not settle is left out, and the PDF is the record. Times are the manufacturer’s warranty allowances, not a quote. Listings and prices on eBay Motors are the seller’s.

The summary is NHTSA’s abstract of the document, as filed under 49 CFR 579.5. One communication is usually filed as several documents — the bulletin, a dealer notice, an owner letter — and the number on any of them finds this page. A PDF link is shown only once NHTSA’s own server has been seen to serve that document; the rest are checked over the following nights. Quote the number at a service desk; it is what the dealer’s system is keyed on.

Owners of the 15 model years this bulletin names have filed 540 complaints with NHTSA since 2015. 19 of them name Service Brakes — the same broad component group this bulletin is filed under. There have been 3 incidents where the car responded to unknown stimuli by braking hard. 3 months ago it happened while making a left turn through an intersection, driving about 10 mph the brakes unexpectedly locked up, luckily the person behind me took evasive action and didn't hit me; 2 weeks later it happened again, I was driving on…

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class · Service Brakes · filed with NHTSA Oct 2, 2024

My 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE 350 unexpectedly braked on its own on two separate occasions while I was driving at a low speed, approximately 5 to 10 mph. There was no warning chime, no “BRAKE!” message, and no other warning immediately before the vehicle suddenly braked. One of the incidents occurred while driving through a drive-thru.

A complaint is one owner’s account, not a defect finding, and a bulletin is not a recall. Nothing here says this bulletin was issued because of these complaints, or that the repair it describes fixed them. Complaint files on this site begin in 2015.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR 579.5

Is Mercedes-Benz LI42.10-P-080253 a recall?

No. A service bulletin is a manufacturer communication filed with NHTSA under 49 CFR 579.5; a safety recall carries an NHTSA campaign number (two digits, a letter, six digits) and a federal duty to repair for free. Check the vehicle’s recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or on its page here.

Is the LI42.10-P-080253 repair free?

Not automatically. A service bulletin describes how to diagnose or repair a condition; who pays depends on the warranty in force, any extension, and the dealer. Quoting the number can save a diagnosis either way.

Which vehicles does LI42.10-P-080253 cover?

The manufacturer filed it against 15 model years: 2027 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class, 2026 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class, 2025 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class, 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class, 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class, 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class and more. Whether one particular vehicle is affected is a matter of its VIN and its build, not its model year alone.
