Mazda bulletin SA-082-23

What it saysBefore judging a steering wheel as having premature wear or a defect, first clean the steering wheel as explained in the repair information. NHTSA’s full summary ↓

Mazda filed this with NHTSA as a service bulletin dated Dec 8, 2023, received Jan 6, 2024, about the steering. It names 21 model years (2020–2024). A service bulletin is not a safety recall: it is the manufacturer telling its dealers how to diagnose or repair a condition, and whether the work is paid for depends on the warranty in force. Quoting the number at a service desk can save a diagnosis.

The summary is NHTSA’s abstract of the document, as filed under 49 CFR 579.5. One communication is usually filed as several documents — the bulletin, a dealer notice, an owner letter — and the number on any of them finds this page. A PDF link is shown only once NHTSA’s own server has been seen to serve that document; the rest are checked over the following nights. Quote the number at a service desk; it is what the dealer’s system is keyed on.

Owners of the 21 model years this bulletin names have filed 994 complaints with NHTSA since 2015. 240 of them name Steering, Structure — the same broad component group this bulletin is filed under. The contact owns a 2023 Mazda CX-50. The contact stated that while in a parking lot, the steering wheel was moving to the left and the right. The contact stated that the wheel was wobbling. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed that the steering wheel bolt was loosened.

When driving on ice the car mistakes a lack of steering resistance for hands being off the wheel (especially when both hands are on the wheel providing even resistance to both sides). It will sound an alarm and jerk the wheel to the side to get the driver's attention, but that sideways jerk causes a loss of steering in icy conditions.

The issue is the steering colomn. There is a bolt that comes loose when driving on "irregular roads". my safety was at risk because if this bolt decided to come out i would not have control of the vehicle. I was told that the steering wheel would disconnect from the steering colomn or the steering wheel would completly detatch.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR 579.5

Is Mazda SA-082-23 a recall?

No. A service bulletin is a manufacturer communication filed with NHTSA under 49 CFR 579.5; a safety recall carries an NHTSA campaign number (two digits, a letter, six digits) and a federal duty to repair for free. Check the vehicle’s recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or on its page here.

Is the SA-082-23 repair free?

Not automatically. A service bulletin describes how to diagnose or repair a condition; who pays depends on the warranty in force, any extension, and the dealer. Quoting the number can save a diagnosis either way. Every Mazda warranty extension on file lists the ones Mazda has filed.

Which vehicles does SA-082-23 cover?

The manufacturer filed it against 21 model years: 2024 Mazda CX-30, 2023 Mazda CX-30, 2022 Mazda CX-30, 2021 Mazda CX-30, 2020 Mazda CX-30, 2024 Mazda CX-5 and more. Whether one particular vehicle is affected is a matter of its VIN and its build, not its model year alone.
