Chevrolet bulletin PIP5935B

What it saysCommunicates the need for restriction on 2019 through 2023 6.6L L5D engines NHTSA’s full summary ↓

Chevrolet filed this with NHTSA as a service bulletin dated Jan 22, 2024, received Feb 12, 2024, about the engine. It names 6 model years (2019–2023). A service bulletin is not a safety recall: it is the manufacturer telling its dealers how to diagnose or repair a condition, and whether the work is paid for depends on the warranty in force. Quoting the number at a service desk can save a diagnosis.

Engine 6.6L “Communicates the need for restriction on 2019 through 2023 6.6L L5D engines”

What it applies to, as NHTSA’s summary states it — build dates and equipment as the manufacturer filed them. The dealer checks the VIN and the build date on the door jamb; a vehicle outside the window is not covered by this bulletin.

The summary is NHTSA’s abstract of the document, as filed under 49 CFR 579.5. One communication is usually filed as several documents — the bulletin, a dealer notice, an owner letter — and the number on any of them finds this page. A PDF link is shown only once NHTSA’s own server has been seen to serve that document; the rest are checked over the following nights. Quote the number at a service desk; it is what the dealer’s system is keyed on.

What owners reported

Source: NHTSA complaint database

Owners of the 5 model years this bulletin names have filed 3,761 complaints with NHTSA since 2015. 1,626 of them name Engine — the same broad component group this bulletin is filed under. NHTSA groups complaints coarsely, so that means the same area of the vehicle, not necessarily the same fault.

On the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado, the 143 owners who gave an odometer reading for Engine reported it at a median of 71,000 miles. That figure is one model year’s, not the whole range this bulletin covers — medians from different model years are not averaged.

Vehicle continues to go into limp mode causing us to be stranded on the side of the road. It is related to DEF injection system issues. It sounds like this is a known issue with the software. We purchased the vehicle in August and have been unable to use the truck since purchasing as it continues to leave us stranded.

At cold start up, the truck immediately illuminated the check engine light with a message of reduced engine power. A shut down and restart produced the same results. Shut the truck off and pulled the trouble code P26BB. Next start up, check engine light was still on, but the reduced engine power message was gone.

A complaint is one owner’s account, not a defect finding, and a bulletin is not a recall. Nothing here says this bulletin was issued because of these complaints, or that the repair it describes fixed them. Complaint files on this site begin in 2015.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR 579.5

Is Chevrolet PIP5935B a recall?

No. A service bulletin is a manufacturer communication filed with NHTSA under 49 CFR 579.5; a safety recall carries an NHTSA campaign number (two digits, a letter, six digits) and a federal duty to repair for free. Check the vehicle’s recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or on its page here.

Is the PIP5935B repair free?

Not automatically. A service bulletin describes how to diagnose or repair a condition; who pays depends on the warranty in force, any extension, and the dealer. Quoting the number can save a diagnosis either way. Every GM warranty extension on file lists the ones GM has filed.

Which vehicles does PIP5935B cover?

The manufacturer filed it against 6 model years: 2023 Chevrolet Silverado, 2022 Chevrolet Silverado, 2021 Chevrolet Silverado, 2020 Chevrolet Silverado, 2019 Chevrolet Silverado, 2019 Chevrolet 6500. Whether one particular vehicle is affected is a matter of its VIN and its build, not its model year alone.
