BMW X1 brake problems, 2016–2027

115 of the 538 complaints owners filed with NHTSA about the BMW X1 2016–2027 name the brakes (NHTSA’s “Service Brakes” heading — the hydraulic brakes, ABS and brake assist). The loudest years: 2023 (53), 2017 (27), 2024 (19). Filed under the same heading across these years: 2 recall campaigns. Every figure is a linked federal record; none is a failure rate, none a repair cost, and none a verdict on one car.

Two things the counts carry that are not the car: how many of each year were sold, and how long each has been on the road — an older year out-counts a newer one before anything is wrong with it. The share column is the honest comparison across years: what part of that year’s complaints named the brakes. Nothing here is a rate.

Filed with NHTSA by the people who own these cars, about the brakes, from the model years with the most to say. Quoted as written, with anything identifying removed; unverified reports — what was said, not a finding that it was true.

Still no fix for this recall. Been 7 months. I am unable to use this vehicle for employment due to its recall status

The local dealer was contacted, and it was confirmed that the part was not available.

"SECURE VEHICLE WITH PARKING BREAK" is the error msg. This is a VERY common problem with the F48 F49 2017 BMW X1. The replacement part cost around $10. It is a very small spring deep in the center console. Dealer estimates to fix it are $2500-$3500 due to the labor cost.
Service Brakes Feb 6, 2024 NHTSA owner report
Every time I am stepping in and out of the car, a warning message comes both on the panel and connected drive that mentions secure vehicle against rolling - pictures attached. This is safety feature and should be fixed by BMW through a recall; there are similar posts also on the internet that describes the same problem with BMW models.
Service Brakes Mar 14, 2023 NHTSA owner report
On 2/25/26, in rush hour traffic we were driving on a NJ highway. We happened to be in the left-most of 3 lanes with a concrete divider (no shoulder – there was about 3 ft between the concrete divider and the left side of the left lane). We were about 4 car lengths behind the next car when traffic was slowing for a red light.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA complaint database, recalls and manufacturer communications

Which BMW X1 years have the most brake complaints?

2023, 53; 2017, 27; 2024, 19. Raw counts, and an older year has had longer to collect them; by share of each year's own complaints the loudest is the 2026 (100%).

Is there a recall for the brakes on the BMW X1?

Yes — 2 campaigns are filed under this heading across these model years: 26V422000 (2024), 24V697000 (2024). A recall is matched by VIN, and applies to specific years; check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

When do brake problems show up on the BMW X1?

Owners who gave an odometer reading reported it at a median of 13,000 miles across the model years; half of them between 7,000 and 22,000. That is when reports cluster, not the life of a part.

What does NHTSA's "Service Brakes" heading cover?

The hydraulic brakes, ABS and brake assist. Owners choose the heading when they file, so it says which area of the vehicle the complaint is about, not which part failed.
