Counts are owner reports to NHTSA, not verified defects, and scale with how many of these were sold; nothing here is a rate. NHTSA groups complaints coarsely, so “Engine” means the same area of the vehicle, not one fault.

In owners’ own words

Start/stop error occurred on dashboard and a day later the check engine came on. I took it in to get diagnosed & was told the software was recalled and needed updated. A few days later the start/stop error came back on, engine light came on, car was jerking and my engine would shut off as I am driving and would tell me to start my engine…
The contact owns a 2021 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport. The electronic power control (ECP) and check engine warning light was illuminated after driving approximately 20 to 30 minutes at 55 MPH or higher, the vehicle suddenly powered off inadvertently. The contact would restart the vehicle immediately.
The contact owns a 2021 Volkswagen Atlas. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, there was an abnormal burning odor detected. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer four times, who stated that it was normal. The manager informed her the cabin wall was thin.
We have had this Atlas Cross Sport R-line for 2 years. Over these two years, the car will intermittently stall when I come to a stop sign or stop light. Many times it has nearly caused an accident. I consistently turn the auto on-off OFF as it is not a feature I like, the problem happens with that feature disabled.
The car has auto on/off when idling at a stop. It will often just power down completely and not power back up when idling. Because of this at intersections i have almost been hit twice but it has happened 7 times in 1 year.

Common questions
Source: NHTSA complaint database, recalls and manufacturer communicationsAre engine problems common on the 2021 Volkswagen Atlas?
They are documented: NHTSA holds 122 owner complaints naming the engine on this model year (19% of everything owners filed about it), and 399 manufacturer bulletins are filed under the same heading. Whether it is a problem on one particular car is a diagnosis, not a count, and a count says nothing about how many were sold.
Is there a recall for the engine on the 2021 Volkswagen Atlas?
No recall campaign is filed under this heading for this model year (there are 17 filed under other headings). A bulletin is not a recall: it carries no federal duty to repair for free.
When do engine problems show up on the 2021 Volkswagen Atlas?
Too few of the complaints carry an odometer reading to say. The model year's page shows the mileage curve across every system where it can.
What does NHTSA's "Engine" heading cover?
The engine and its cooling system. Owners choose the heading when they file, so it says which area of the vehicle the complaint is about, not which part failed.
