Mazda CX-90 engine problems, 2024–2026
92 of the 493 complaints owners filed with NHTSA about the Mazda CX-90 2024–2026 name the engine (NHTSA’s “Engine” heading — the engine and its cooling system). The loudest years: 2024 (82), 2025 (9), 2026 (1). Filed under the same heading across these years: 5 manufacturer bulletins. Every figure is a linked federal record; none is a failure rate, none a repair cost, and none a verdict on one car.

Two things the counts carry that are not the car: how many of each year were sold, and how long each has been on the road — an older year out-counts a newer one before anything is wrong with it. The share column is the honest comparison across years: what part of that year’s complaints named the engine. Nothing here is a rate.

Ever since the lease of this vehicle on January 2025 we’ve had problems with the brake/rotors took it in twice for that. As of recent August 2025, we took it in for loss of power going up a hill, hybrid malfunctioning electrical system going out. Dealership gave it back saying everything was fine.
This is a 2024 Mazda CX-90 PEHV where I took it in for all recalls on January 17th, 2025 related to loss of power and hybrid system malfunction. Today, Jan 31st, 2024 (2 weeks and a few 100 miles later), I now have engine malfunction warnings lights.
I own a 2026 Mazda CX-90 hybrid with approximately 13,000 miles. The vehicle began making a grinding noise while driving, which has progressively worsened over time. It has since developed a hard knocking noise accompanied by noticeable vibration when the vehicle shifts gears. This knocking occurs during normal in-town driving.
I am submitting this complaint regarding my 2025 Mazda CX-90 PHEV, leased in April 2025. Since early in my lease, the vehicle has had ongoing drivability issues that have worsened over time and now present a serious safety concern. From the beginning, the vehicle exhibited jerking and hesitation while driving.
My boyfriend and I rented the car from Hertz Car Rental in on Labor Day weekend. Within moments of driving the car off the lot, the safety camera system stopped working and the lights came on saying they weren’t working. The touch screen also started glitching and intermittently working but we didn’t think too much about it.

Common questions
Source: NHTSA complaint database, recalls and manufacturer communicationsWhich Mazda CX-90 years have the most engine complaints?
2024, 82; 2025, 9; 2026, 1. Raw counts, and an older year has had longer to collect them; by share of each year's own complaints the loudest is the 2025 (21%).
Is there a recall for the engine on the Mazda CX-90?
No recall campaign is filed under this heading on any of these model years. A bulletin is not a recall: it carries no federal duty to repair for free.
When do engine problems show up on the Mazda CX-90?
Too few of the complaints carry an odometer reading to say.
What does NHTSA's "Engine" heading cover?
The engine and its cooling system. Owners choose the heading when they file, so it says which area of the vehicle the complaint is about, not which part failed.
