Tesla bulletin SB2320002R6

What it saysCertain Model 3 and Model Y vehicles may need a different Occupant Classification System (OCS) installed in the front passenger seat before servicing its subcomponents. NHTSA’s full summary ↓

Tesla filed this with NHTSA as a service bulletin dated Aug 2, 2023, received Oct 2, 2023, about the structure. It names 12 model years (2017–2023). A service bulletin is not a safety recall: it is the manufacturer telling its dealers how to diagnose or repair a condition, and whether the work is paid for depends on the warranty in force. Quoting the number at a service desk can save a diagnosis.

The summary is NHTSA’s abstract of the document, as filed under 49 CFR 579.5. One communication is usually filed as several documents — the bulletin, a dealer notice, an owner letter — and the number on any of them finds this page. A PDF link is shown only once NHTSA’s own server has been seen to serve that document; the rest are checked over the following nights. Quote the number at a service desk; it is what the dealer’s system is keyed on.

Owners of the 12 model years this bulletin names have filed 7,464 complaints with NHTSA since 2015.

On the 2018 Tesla Model 3, the 29 owners who gave an odometer reading for Structure reported it at a median of 16,675 miles. That figure is one model year’s, not the whole range this bulletin covers — medians from different model years are not averaged.

As I was opening the passenger door, my nail got caught in the space between the handle and the car. As background, in order to open the door one I has to push the handle on one side for the other side to come out, as I was doing this my nail got caught in the gap created when pushing one side tearing off more than half of my nail.

I was in a parking garage next to my work and was parking between two cars, I was coming to a complete stop when my car suddenly accelerated and hit the pillar on the left side. It was only a few seconds and I applied the brakes and put the car on park. This is a brand new car with less than 500 miles on it.

2020 Tesla Model Y · Structure · filed with NHTSA Dec 28, 2020 · ODI 11385350

The undercarriage shield of my car disconnected and started dragging while I was driving in the rain. I did not collide into anything or hit a bump. I inspected my wheel well to discover a set of screws that were bunched up and not installed during manufacturing.

A complaint is one owner’s account, not a defect finding, and a bulletin is not a recall. Nothing here says this bulletin was issued because of these complaints, or that the repair it describes fixed them. Complaint files on this site begin in 2015.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR 579.5

Is Tesla SB2320002R6 a recall?

No. A service bulletin is a manufacturer communication filed with NHTSA under 49 CFR 579.5; a safety recall carries an NHTSA campaign number (two digits, a letter, six digits) and a federal duty to repair for free. Check the vehicle’s recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or on its page here.

Is the SB2320002R6 repair free?

Not automatically. A service bulletin describes how to diagnose or repair a condition; who pays depends on the warranty in force, any extension, and the dealer. Quoting the number can save a diagnosis either way.

Which vehicles does SB2320002R6 cover?

The manufacturer filed it against 12 model years: 2023 Tesla Model 3, 2022 Tesla Model 3, 2021 Tesla Model 3, 2020 Tesla Model 3, 2019 Tesla Model 3, 2018 Tesla Model 3 and more. Whether one particular vehicle is affected is a matter of its VIN and its build, not its model year alone.
