Nissan bulletin PC966/PC980

What it saysVOLUNTARY SAFETY RECALL CAMPAIGN 2022-2023 PATHFINDER AND 2021-2023 ROGUE; DRIVER’S SEAT RAIL INSPECTION INTRODUCTION Nissan is conducting this voluntary safety recall campaign on certain specific model year 2022-2023… NHTSA’s full summary ↓

Nissan filed this with NHTSA as a service bulletin dated Jul 23, 2024, received Jul 29, 2024, about the seats — 2 documents under this number: NTB23-033, NTB23-033A. It names 5 model years (2021–2023). A service bulletin is not a safety recall: it is the manufacturer telling its dealers how to diagnose or repair a condition, and whether the work is paid for depends on the warranty in force. Quoting the number at a service desk can save a diagnosis.

Picked out of NHTSA’s summary below, word for word. The document itself is the record, and the dealer checks the VIN.

2023 Nissan Pathfinder 6 Sep 2022 – 8 Nov 2022 “Manufactured between September 6, 2022 to November 8, 2022”
2023 Nissan Rogue 7 Sep 2022 – 21 Oct 2022 “Manufactured from September 7, 2022 to October 21, 2022”

What it applies to, as the document itself states it — the build window in the manufacturer’s own words, read by machine from the PDF NHTSA serves. The build date is on the certification label in the driver’s door jamb; the dealer settles a borderline vehicle by its VIN.

VOLUNTARY SAFETY RECALL CAMPAIGN 2022-2023 PATHFINDER AND 2021-2023 ROGUE; DRIVER’S SEAT RAIL INSPECTION INTRODUCTION Nissan is conducting this voluntary safety recall campaign on certain specific model year 2022-2023 Pathfinder and 2021-2023 Rogue vehicles to inspect, and if necessary, replace the Driver’s Seat Rail. This service will be performed at no charge to the customer for parts or labor. IDENTIFICATION NUMBER Nissan has assigned identification numbers PC966 and PC980 to this campaign. The applicable number must appear on all communication and documentation of any nature dealing with this campaign. DEALER RESPONSIBILITY It is the dealer’s responsibility to check Service COMM or Dealer Business Systems (DBS) National Service History for the campaign status on each vehicle falling within the range of this voluntary safety recall which for any reason enters the service department. This includes vehicles purchased from private parties or presented by transient (tourist) owners and vehicles in a dealer’s inventory. Federal law requires that new vehicles in dealer inventory which are the subject of a safety recall must be corrected prior to sale. Failure to do so can result in civil penalties by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. While federal law applies only to new vehicles, Nissan strongly encourages dealers to correct any used vehicles in their inventory before they are retailed.

Read by machine from the document NHTSA serves (6 pages), read Sep 30, 2026. A part number is shown only where it matches Nissan’s own catalogue shape, an operation only with its code and time, and a description only where the reader got it whole; anything it could not settle is left out, and the PDF is the record. Times are the manufacturer’s warranty allowances, not a quote. Listings and prices on eBay Motors are the seller’s.

The summary is NHTSA’s abstract of the document, as filed under 49 CFR 579.5. One communication is usually filed as several documents — the bulletin, a dealer notice, an owner letter — and the number on any of them finds this page. A PDF link is shown only once NHTSA’s own server has been seen to serve that document; the rest are checked over the following nights. Quote the number at a service desk; it is what the dealer’s system is keyed on.

What owners reported

Source: NHTSA complaint database

Owners of the 5 model years this bulletin names have filed 1,550 complaints with NHTSA since 2015. 16 of them name Seats — the same broad component group this bulletin is filed under. NHTSA groups complaints coarsely, so that means the same area of the vehicle, not necessarily the same fault.

Passenger seat is too low/not equal to driver’s seat. Driver’s seat has 10-way functions including raising the seat up and down. Passenger seat does not. My wife can’t see over the hood clearly and there may be an accident where she might hit the dashboard or the airbags might injure her when triggered because the seat is too low.

A complaint is one owner’s account, not a defect finding, and a bulletin is not a recall. Nothing here says this bulletin was issued because of these complaints, or that the repair it describes fixed them. Complaint files on this site begin in 2015.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR 579.5

Is Nissan PC966/PC980 a recall?

No. A service bulletin is a manufacturer communication filed with NHTSA under 49 CFR 579.5; a safety recall carries an NHTSA campaign number (two digits, a letter, six digits) and a federal duty to repair for free. Check the vehicle’s recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or on its page here.

Is the PC966/PC980 repair free?

Not automatically. A service bulletin describes how to diagnose or repair a condition; who pays depends on the warranty in force, any extension, and the dealer. Quoting the number can save a diagnosis either way.

Which vehicles does PC966/PC980 cover?

The manufacturer filed it against 5 model years: 2023 Nissan Pathfinder, 2022 Nissan Pathfinder, 2023 Nissan Rogue, 2022 Nissan Rogue, 2021 Nissan Rogue. Whether one particular vehicle is affected is a matter of its VIN and its build, not its model year alone. The document itself sets the build window: 2023 Nissan Pathfinder: built 6 Sep 2022 – 8 Nov 2022; 2023 Nissan Rogue: built 7 Sep 2022 – 21 Oct 2022 — the build date is on the certification label in the driver’s door jamb.
