Ford filed this with NHTSA as a manufacturer communication dated Jul 14, 2025, received Aug 1, 2025, about the power train. It names 3 model years (2024–2025). A manufacturer communication is not a safety recall: it is the manufacturer telling its dealers how to diagnose or repair a condition, and whether the work is paid for depends on the warranty in force. Quoting the number at a service desk can save a diagnosis.

Certain 2024-2025 Model Year F-150 Vehicles Equipped With Floor Console Gear Shift Module (GSM) On all of the affected vehicles, the GSM may experience a malfunction and the floor console GSM shifter may be unable to stow or un-stow when the gear shift stow button is pressed and an illuminated wrench light will be displayed on the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). The summary is NHTSA’s abstract of the document, as filed under 49 CFR 579.5. One communication is usually filed as several documents — the bulletin, a dealer notice, an owner letter — and the number on any of them finds this page. A PDF link is shown only once NHTSA’s own server has been seen to serve that document; the rest are checked over the following nights. Quote the number at a service desk; it is what the dealer’s system is keyed on.

What owners reported

Source: NHTSA complaint database

Owners of the 3 model years this bulletin names have filed 272 complaints with NHTSA since 2015. 73 of them name Power Train — the same broad component group this bulletin is filed under. NHTSA groups complaints coarsely, so that means the same area of the vehicle, not necessarily the same fault.

A Powertrain Malfunction/Reduced Power light showed up on my 2024 Ford F150 4x4 (9700 miles) and again and several other times including today. I immediately took it to Ford of Columbia in Columbia TN, and the diagnoses that there was an issue with the Gear Shift Lever Module (Part #RL3Z7210AD) and it was ordered.

Following a software update by Ford in the past 6-8 months, upon start-up my vehicle asks me which drive mode I wish to be in but then after 15-45 seconds "forgets" my answer and changes drive modes. This results in regenerative braking being disabled, at random, in the middle of a drive.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR 579.5

Is Ford 25B09 a recall?

No. A manufacturer communication is a manufacturer communication filed with NHTSA under 49 CFR 579.5; a safety recall carries an NHTSA campaign number (two digits, a letter, six digits) and a federal duty to repair for free. Check the vehicle’s recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or on its page here.

Is the 25B09 repair free?

Not automatically. A service bulletin describes how to diagnose or repair a condition; who pays depends on the warranty in force, any extension, and the dealer. Quoting the number can save a diagnosis either way.

Which vehicles does 25B09 cover?

The manufacturer filed it against 3 model years: 2024 Ford F-150, 2025 Ford F-150 Lightning, 2024 Ford F-150 Lightning. Whether one particular vehicle is affected is a matter of its VIN and its build, not its model year alone.
