GM bulletin PIT5987A

What it saysThis Preliminary information communicates that a customer may come to the dealer complaining of a whining noise from the steering system. NHTSA’s full summary ↓

GM filed this with NHTSA as a service bulletin dated Sep 12, 2024, about the steering. It names 17 model years across Chevrolet, GMC, Buick and Cadillac (2022–2024). A service bulletin is not a safety recall: it is the manufacturer telling its dealers how to diagnose or repair a condition, and whether the work is paid for depends on the warranty in force. Quoting the number at a service desk can save a diagnosis.

One page for every brand it was filed under. Each brand’s bulletins: Chevrolet · GMC · Buick · Cadillac.

The summary is NHTSA’s abstract of the document, as filed under 49 CFR 579.5. One communication is usually filed as several documents — the bulletin, a dealer notice, an owner letter — and the number on any of them finds this page. A PDF link is shown only once NHTSA’s own server has been seen to serve that document; the rest are checked over the following nights. Quote the number at a service desk; it is what the dealer’s system is keyed on.

What owners reported

Source: NHTSA complaint database

Owners of the 17 model years this bulletin names have filed 797 complaints with NHTSA since 2015. 16 of them name Steering — the same broad component group this bulletin is filed under. NHTSA groups complaints coarsely, so that means the same area of the vehicle, not necessarily the same fault.

I own a 2024 Buick Enclave Avenir the steering wheel has a Whining Noise when vehicle is in motion or standing when turning the steering wheel. The Air Bag is in the steering wheel I am concerned if there is a problem with the steering wheel if the Air Bag could eject from the steering wheel causing an accident when vehicle is in motion.

I bought cadillac XT6 four months ago . Last week i noticed that car steering lock when turning right on highway over 25mph. I went to the empire cadillac of long island city (NY). Mechanic took test drive with me and even he noticed that there is some problem. After keeping my car 2 days they said they did not find anything.

2023 Cadillac XT6 · Steering · filed with NHTSA Aug 15, 2023 · ODI 11538747

While driving, the vehicle displayed a “Service Power Steering” warning message, and shortly after, the steering became noticeably heavier and less responsive. The issue occurs intermittently but has worsened over time, creating a serious safety concern because loss of steering assist could occur at any speed.

2022 Chevrolet Blazer · Steering · filed with NHTSA Oct 15, 2025 · ODI 11693646

A complaint is one owner’s account, not a defect finding, and a bulletin is not a recall. Nothing here says this bulletin was issued because of these complaints, or that the repair it describes fixed them. Complaint files on this site begin in 2015.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR 579.5

Is GM PIT5987A a recall?

No. A service bulletin is a manufacturer communication filed with NHTSA under 49 CFR 579.5; a safety recall carries an NHTSA campaign number (two digits, a letter, six digits) and a federal duty to repair for free. Check the vehicle’s recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or on its page here.

Is the PIT5987A repair free?

Not automatically. A service bulletin describes how to diagnose or repair a condition; who pays depends on the warranty in force, any extension, and the dealer. Quoting the number can save a diagnosis either way. Every GM warranty extension on file lists the ones GM has filed.

Which vehicles does PIT5987A cover?

The manufacturer filed it against 17 model years across 4 brands (Chevrolet, GMC, Buick and Cadillac): 2024 Buick Enclave, 2023 Buick Enclave, 2022 Buick Enclave, 2024 Cadillac XT5, 2023 Cadillac XT5, 2022 Cadillac XT5 and more. Whether one particular vehicle is affected is a matter of its VIN and its build, not its model year alone.
