GM filed this with NHTSA as a service campaign dated Jun 13, 2024, received May 13, 2024 — 3 documents under this number. It names 9 model years across Chevrolet, GMC, Buick and Cadillac (2024). A service campaign is not a safety recall — there is no NHTSA campaign number and no federal requirement — but it is usually work the manufacturer pays for on the vehicles it names; the dealer checks the VIN against the manufacturer’s list.

What the bulletin says

Source: NHTSA's summary of the manufacturer's communication

Upcoming Service Update - Effective immediately, certain 2024 model year Buick Encore GX, Cadillac XT4, XT5, XT6, Chevrolet Blazer, Trailblazer, Traverse, Traverse Limited, GMC Acadia and Terrain vehicles have been placed in Incomplete Remedy Not Available status in IVH. These VINs are in transit or in new vehicle inventory. Some of these vehicles may have a condition in which the clutch backing plate retaining ring and/or the clutch piston retaining ring inside the transmission are out of specification. The upcoming Service Update Bulletin number is N242446290. GM will be releasing the service bulletin and service procedure in the near future. All product field actions, including the upcoming Service Update Bulletin must be completed before delivering these vehicles to customers. Involved vehicles must be held until further notice. The Investigate Vehicle History (IVH) screen in the Global Warranty Management (GWM) system will be updated with a VIN Status as “Incomplete Remedy Not Available” on May 13, 2024. This action has been taken to assist dealers with determining which vehicles are involved so they can properly respond to customer inquiries. A list of involved vehicles that have been identified as being in dealer new vehicle inventory is attached to this message. It is sorted by dealer Business Associate Code (BAC) for easy reference. Your dealership’s BAC will not be listed if none of the involved vehicles are currently in your new vehicle inventory. When we have a sufficient quantity of parts available the bulletin will be released and vehicles can be repaired. We expect to have more information in the near future. END OF MESSAGE

Labour operation and the time the manufacturer allows

OperationDescriptionTime
N242446290—6.91 hrs

Read by machine from the document NHTSA serves (12 pages), read Sep 30, 2026. A part number is shown only where it matches GM’s own catalogue shape, an operation only with its code and time, and a description only where the reader got it whole; anything it could not settle is left out, and the PDF is the record. Times are the manufacturer’s warranty allowances, not a quote.

The summary is NHTSA’s abstract of the document, as filed under 49 CFR 579.5. One communication is usually filed as several documents — the bulletin, a dealer notice, an owner letter — and the number on any of them finds this page. A PDF link is shown only once NHTSA’s own server has been seen to serve that document; the rest are checked over the following nights. Quote the number at a service desk; it is what the dealer’s system is keyed on.

What owners reported

Source: NHTSA complaint database

Owners of the 9 model years this bulletin names have filed 520 complaints with NHTSA since 2015.

A complaint is one owner’s account, not a defect finding, and a bulletin is not a recall. Nothing here says this bulletin was issued because of these complaints, or that the repair it describes fixed them. Complaint files on this site begin in 2015.

Quote the number at the service desk. It is what the dealer’s system is keyed on.

Every manufacturer communication NHTSA holds for Chevrolet, GMC, Buick and Cadillac, by the number printed on the letter.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR 579.5

Is GM N242446290 a recall?

No. A service campaign is a manufacturer communication filed with NHTSA under 49 CFR 579.5; a safety recall carries an NHTSA campaign number (two digits, a letter, six digits) and a federal duty to repair for free. Check the vehicle’s recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or on its page here.

Is the N242446290 repair free?

A service campaign is usually paid by the manufacturer on the vehicles it names, within the terms and time limit the document sets; the dealer checks the VIN against the manufacturer’s list.

Which vehicles does N242446290 cover?

The manufacturer filed it against 9 model years across 4 brands (Chevrolet, GMC, Buick and Cadillac): 2024 Buick Encore, 2024 Cadillac XT4, 2024 Cadillac XT5, 2024 Cadillac XT6, 2024 Chevrolet Blazer, 2024 Chevrolet Trailblazer and more. Whether one particular vehicle is affected is a matter of its VIN and its build, not its model year alone.
