BMW bulletin B240323

What it says?A software error may cause an unwanted pressure pulsation in the transmission during a "Remote Engine Start." NHTSA’s full summary ↓

BMW filed this with NHTSA as a service bulletin dated Aug 1, 2023, received Sep 25, 2023, about the engine. It names 24 model years (2020–2023). A service bulletin is not a safety recall: it is the manufacturer telling its dealers how to diagnose or repair a condition, and whether the work is paid for depends on the warranty in force. Quoting the number at a service desk can save a diagnosis.

The summary is NHTSA’s abstract of the document, as filed under 49 CFR 579.5. One communication is usually filed as several documents — the bulletin, a dealer notice, an owner letter — and the number on any of them finds this page. A PDF link is shown only once NHTSA’s own server has been seen to serve that document; the rest are checked over the following nights. Quote the number at a service desk; it is what the dealer’s system is keyed on.

What owners reported

Source: NHTSA complaint database

Owners of the 22 model years this bulletin names have filed 817 complaints with NHTSA since 2015. 383 of them name Engine, Power Train — the same broad component group this bulletin is filed under. NHTSA groups complaints coarsely, so that means the same area of the vehicle, not necessarily the same fault.

On the 2020 BMW X5, the 13 owners who gave an odometer reading for Engine reported it at a median of 60,000 miles. That figure is one model year’s, not the whole range this bulletin covers — medians from different model years are not averaged.

While driving on a highway the message power train malfunction appears on screen and engine shut off only allowing me seconds to coast to edge of road it was at night we could have been hit from behind we were able to push it further off the highway I tried restarting it over and over about 10 minutes went by it started we proceeded to…

On most modern BMW models (with Hot V V8 engines like the N/S 63) the coolant tank that is supposed to last at least the lifetime of the vehicle, only lasts about 40,000 Miles before cracking. The main issue is that the tank sits over the engine, which when coolant leaks, it will leak into the injectors causing engine misfires.

2022 BMW 5 Series · Engine · filed with NHTSA Sep 10, 2026 · ODI 11763306

Fuel pump failed within a minute of initial warning and performance indicating a problem. While driving ~60 mph on the highway, available power dropped to zero within a couple tenths of a mile, *barely* allowing me to move to the shoulder. Screen error/fault indicated vehicle was ok to keep driving but to schedule service soon.

A complaint is one owner’s account, not a defect finding, and a bulletin is not a recall. Nothing here says this bulletin was issued because of these complaints, or that the repair it describes fixed them. Complaint files on this site begin in 2015.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR 579.5

Is BMW B240323 a recall?

No. A service bulletin is a manufacturer communication filed with NHTSA under 49 CFR 579.5; a safety recall carries an NHTSA campaign number (two digits, a letter, six digits) and a federal duty to repair for free. Check the vehicle’s recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or on its page here.

Is the B240323 repair free?

Not automatically. A service bulletin describes how to diagnose or repair a condition; who pays depends on the warranty in force, any extension, and the dealer. Quoting the number can save a diagnosis either way. Every BMW warranty extension on file lists the ones BMW has filed.

Which vehicles does B240323 cover?

The manufacturer filed it against 24 model years: 2023 BMW 3 Series, 2022 BMW 3 Series, 2021 BMW 3 Series, 2020 BMW 3 Series, 2022 BMW 4 Series, 2021 BMW 4 Series and more. Whether one particular vehicle is affected is a matter of its VIN and its build, not its model year alone.
