Volkswagen Jetta engine problems, 2016–2027

285 of the 1,190 complaints owners filed with NHTSA about the Volkswagen Jetta 2016–2027 name the engine (NHTSA’s “Engine” heading — the engine and its cooling system). The loudest years: 2019 (149), 2016 (45), 2017 (34). Filed under the same heading across these years: 4 manufacturer bulletins, 1 recall campaign. Every figure is a linked federal record; none is a failure rate, none a repair cost, and none a verdict on one car.

Two things the counts carry that are not the car: how many of each year were sold, and how long each has been on the road — an older year out-counts a newer one before anything is wrong with it. The share column is the honest comparison across years: what part of that year’s complaints named the engine. Nothing here is a rate.

2019 r line Jetta was originally making a grinding sound at 1500 RPM. Now I just got a check oil level notification on my dash. This car has less than 7,000 miles
Engine at 6,757 miles Jul 4, 2019 NHTSA owner report
My manual transmission-equipped 2019 Jetta gli (2.0t) stalls at slow speeds and at stop lights despite the clutch pedal fully engaged ("to the floor") or the vehicle coasting in neutral. I have had the car for three days and in two of those days, the vehicle has stalled while driving through city streets and at stop lights.
Engine at 100 miles May 30, 2019 NHTSA owner report
Technical service bulletin for a known issue that the active grill shutters are stuck in the open or close position. This could cause the engine to over heat. This can happen when car is stationary or in motion
Engine Oct 17, 2020 NHTSA owner report
I drive a 2016 VW Jetta ,my EPC light came on. When I made an appt with the VW dealer, they did a diagnostic on my car with the code p22630,which is the turbocharger /boost. The cost for the part is about $ 2500. For a car that is only a few years old and having a major repair issue ,iam so disappointed and feel not safe at all.

Was driving on the highway, smelled gas, pulled over, car died, EPC light came on. Had the vehicle towed to the nearest VW dealer

Common questions

Source: NHTSA complaint database, recalls and manufacturer communications

Which Volkswagen Jetta years have the most engine complaints?

2019, 149; 2016, 45; 2017, 34. Raw counts, and an older year has had longer to collect them; by share of each year's own complaints the loudest is the 2023 (28%).

Is there a recall for the engine on the Volkswagen Jetta?

Yes — one campaign is filed under this heading across these model years: 17V070000 (2017). A recall is matched by VIN, and applies to specific years; check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

When do engine problems show up on the Volkswagen Jetta?

Owners who gave an odometer reading reported it at a median of 7,775 miles across the model years; half of them between 1,000 and 47,000. That is when reports cluster, not the life of a part.

What does NHTSA's "Engine" heading cover?

The engine and its cooling system. Owners choose the heading when they file, so it says which area of the vehicle the complaint is about, not which part failed.
