Two things the counts carry that are not the car: how many of each year were sold, and how long each has been on the road — an older year out-counts a newer one before anything is wrong with it. The share column is the honest comparison across years: what part of that year’s complaints named the engine. Nothing here is a rate.

At red lights, come to a complete stop with auto engine off feature enabled, as it is automatically enabled upon entering the vehicle. Engine shuts off per auto feature. After 1-3 minutes, receive error messages: Engine stopped. Power Steering Low. Push brake firmly to restart engine." Check Engline Light is on.
When stopping at a traffic light, suddenly the engine shut off by itself and showed message saying: "Engine Stopped. Steering Power Low.". I had to switch to park and pushed the start button manually to restart the engine. This is a safety issue! Note, it happened twice after only purchasing the brand new car for 2 days.
I received the engine maintenance required notification on 7/11. On 7/13, I called my Toyota to make an appt to bring it in at 9 AM. The ran diagnostics for $180 and then the test results said the engine coolant valve is stuck open or closed but either is dangerous because my car could overheat. This is a $850 repair.

2023, 103; 2022, 16; 2024, 7. Raw counts, and an older year has had longer to collect them; by share of each year's own complaints the loudest is the 2023 (59%).
Is there a recall for the engine on the Toyota Corolla Cross?
No recall campaign is filed under this heading on any of these model years. A bulletin is not a recall: it carries no federal duty to repair for free.
When do engine problems show up on the Toyota Corolla Cross?
Too few of the complaints carry an odometer reading to say.
What does NHTSA's "Engine" heading cover?
The engine and its cooling system. Owners choose the heading when they file, so it says which area of the vehicle the complaint is about, not which part failed.
