Tesla Model 3 automatic emergency braking problems, 2017–2027

2,475 of the 4,336 complaints owners filed with NHTSA about the Tesla Model 3 2017–2027 name the automatic emergency braking (NHTSA’s “Forward Collision Avoidance” heading — forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking, including phantom braking). The loudest years: 2022 (790), 2021 (593), 2018 (286). Filed under the same heading across these years: 1 recall campaign, 1 NHTSA investigation. Every figure is a linked federal record; none is a failure rate, none a repair cost, and none a verdict on one car.

Two things the counts carry that are not the car: how many of each year were sold, and how long each has been on the road — an older year out-counts a newer one before anything is wrong with it. The share column is the honest comparison across years: what part of that year’s complaints named the automatic emergency braking. Nothing here is a rate.

In owners’ own words

Filed with NHTSA by the people who own these cars, about the automatic emergency braking, from the model years with the most to say. Quoted as written, with anything identifying removed; unverified reports — what was said, not a finding that it was true.

As widely reported by Tesla owners, I have also experienced issues with the TACC - traffic aware cruise control - feature of this vehicle. I have owned it for almost 2 weeks and in that time on both highways and city streets the 'cruise control' feature has initiated braking for no reason.
Forward Collision Avoidance Jan 12, 2022 NHTSA owner report
Traffic-aware cruise control unexpectedly decelerated and/or activated collision warnings and automatic braking approximately 20 times during a 300 mile, 5 hour drive. All incidents occurred on undivided highways and state roads. This unexpected braking reduces speed by 10 to 30 miles per hour on 60 mile per hour roads.
Forward Collision Avoidance Jan 9, 2022 NHTSA owner report
Traffic Aware Cruise Control in the 2021 Model 3 is down right dangerous. Constant random braking for no reason at all. Happens multiple times if I use TACC on 2 lane roads. Happens nearly every time I use TACC on a 4 lane road. If I have traffic behind me I cannot use TACC at all for fear I would be rear ended
Forward Collision Avoidance Nov 16, 2021 NHTSA owner report
I have been experiencing very frequent adaptive cruise control breaking for no reason. It is getting worse with every software update. It seems like the car is very scared of oncoming traffic and will hit the breaks or slow down for no reason. Sometimes there will be no traffic at all and it happens.
Forward Collision Avoidance Nov 15, 2021 NHTSA owner report
On multiple occasions while my car was in Autopilot mode on highways and at highway speeds, I have experienced rapid braking (phantom braking) when there was no apparent reason for such. All of the phantom braking events have occurred on sunny days, usually around mid-day.

Source: NHTSA complaint database, recalls and manufacturer communications

Which Tesla Model 3 years have the most automatic emergency braking complaints?

2022, 790; 2021, 593; 2018, 286. Raw counts, and an older year has had longer to collect them; by share of each year's own complaints the loudest is the 2022 (103%).

Is there a recall for the automatic emergency braking on the Tesla Model 3?

Yes — one campaign is filed under this heading across these model years: 21V846000 (2021). A recall is matched by VIN, and applies to specific years; check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

When do automatic emergency braking problems show up on the Tesla Model 3?

Owners who gave an odometer reading reported it at a median of 13,300 miles across the model years; half of them between 4,000 and 26,000. That is when reports cluster, not the life of a part.

What does NHTSA's "Forward Collision Avoidance" heading cover?

Forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking, including phantom braking. Owners choose the heading when they file, so it says which area of the vehicle the complaint is about, not which part failed.
