Nissan Titan XD engine problems, 2016–2023

134 of the 199 complaints owners filed with NHTSA about the Nissan Titan XD 2016–2023 name the engine (NHTSA’s “Engine” heading — the engine and its cooling system). The loudest year: 2016 (134). Filed under the same heading across these years: 3 manufacturer bulletins, 1 NHTSA investigation. Every figure is a linked federal record; none is a failure rate, none a repair cost, and none a verdict on one car.

Two things the counts carry that are not the car: how many of each year were sold, and how long each has been on the road — an older year out-counts a newer one before anything is wrong with it. The share column is the honest comparison across years: what part of that year’s complaints named the engine. Nothing here is a rate.

The contact owns a 2016 Nissan Titan. While driving at various speeds, the fumes from the diesel engine penetrated inside the vehicle and made the occupants of the vehicle dizzy and sick. There were no warning indicators illuminated.

Fuel tank gauge keeps bobbing back and forth, the digital range estimate is giving false readings leading to me running out of gas twice, and I get low fuel warnings even with the tank half full. At times the avg MPG would indicate between 15 and 23 MPG and the drop to 9.5 within 30 mins

Common questions

Source: NHTSA complaint database, recalls and manufacturer communications

Which Nissan Titan XD years have the most engine complaints?

2016, 134. Raw counts, and an older year has had longer to collect them; by share of each year's own complaints the loudest is the 2016 (68%).

Is there a recall for the engine on the Nissan Titan XD?

No recall campaign is filed under this heading on any of these model years. A bulletin is not a recall: it carries no federal duty to repair for free.

When do engine problems show up on the Nissan Titan XD?

Owners who gave an odometer reading reported it at a median of 34,859 miles across the model years; half of them between 7,000 and 83,000. That is when reports cluster, not the life of a part.

What does NHTSA's "Engine" heading cover?

The engine and its cooling system. Owners choose the heading when they file, so it says which area of the vehicle the complaint is about, not which part failed.
