In owners’ own words

Filed with NHTSA by the people who own these cars, about the electrical system. Quoted as written, with anything identifying removed; unverified reports — what was said, not a finding that it was true.

We live in san francisco and do a lot of urban driving (aka, there's a ton of stop signs). When the A/C is not on, the engine turns off almost every time we stop. After owning the brand new vehicle for about a year, the radio and lights started turning off when the car would start back up at a stop sign/light.
Electrical System Oct 30, 2019 NHTSA owner report
For a while now the car has had an issue with starting after the auto idle engine stop has engaged. It is slow to start, the radio and infotainment screen cut out, and there is a popping noise. When we had the car in for service last, we mentioned this and they said they couldn't replicate the issue and to record it happening.

The blue tooth features are not reliable. The feature that allows me to verbally tell the car to call someone is not consistently responsive. When I make a call from my phone, the car doesn't always pick it up. Incoming calls consistently come in correctly.
Electrical System at 28,000 miles Oct 14, 2019 NHTSA owner report
I noticed that auto idle would randomly turn off and on the cars electricity for a second. Today, after stopping for traffic, the auto idle kicked in and the car stalled in neutral. Warning lights appeared and I tried to follow the instructions to restart the car, but it wouldn't restart. I was unable to turn the car off.
Electrical System at 46,000 miles Sep 20, 2019 NHTSA owner report
Have a 2017 Honda Pilot touring with 39k miles. Usually the car goes into 'accessory' mode when the auto idle stop kicks in but a couple of months ago something new started- I experienced a total stall for the first time, and it has happened 3 more times since. The car turned completely off, but it did not restart automatically.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA complaint database, recalls and manufacturer communications

Are electrical problems common on the 2017 Honda Pilot?

They are documented: NHTSA holds 267 owner complaints naming the electrical system on this model year (29% of everything owners filed about it), and 47 manufacturer bulletins are filed under the same heading. Whether it is a problem on one particular car is a diagnosis, not a count, and a count says nothing about how many were sold.

Is there a recall for the electrical system on the 2017 Honda Pilot?

No recall campaign is filed under this heading for this model year (there are 4 filed under other headings). A bulletin is not a recall: it carries no federal duty to repair for free.

When do electrical problems show up on the 2017 Honda Pilot?

Owners who gave an odometer reading reported it at a median of 38,500 miles; half of them between 30,000 and 59,000. That is when reports cluster, not the life of a part.

What does NHTSA's "Electrical System" heading cover?

Wiring, modules, batteries, charging, infotainment and driver displays — NHTSA's broadest heading. Owners choose the heading when they file, so it says which area of the vehicle the complaint is about, not which part failed.
