Chevrolet Colorado electrical problems, 2016–2026

346 of the 1,771 complaints owners filed with NHTSA about the Chevrolet Colorado 2016–2026 name the electrical system (NHTSA’s “Electrical System” heading — wiring, modules, batteries, charging, infotainment and driver displays — NHTSA's broadest heading). The loudest years: 2016 (120), 2023 (42), 2017 (41). Filed under the same heading across these years: no document yet. Two things the counts carry that are not the car: how many of each year were sold, and how long each has been on the road — an older year out-counts a newer one before anything is wrong with it. The share column is the honest comparison across years: what part of that year’s complaints named the electrical system. Nothing here is a rate.

In owners’ own words

Filed with NHTSA by the people who own these cars, about the electrical system, from the model years with the most to say. Quoted as written, with anything identifying removed; unverified reports — what was said, not a finding that it was true.

The driver instrument and radio displays go black for some minutes (2 to 20) minutes and then return to function. During the black out I can not check speed, gas mileage, odometer or any other instrument function. I have visited champion Chevrolet in johnson city, tn and wilson county motors in lebanon, tn to have the problem resolved.

While turning into a parking lot the vehicle stalled without warning. All electronics went dead, and vehicle lurched to a stop. After shifting into park the vehicle started normally. Shortly after, while turning on a city street it happened again. Towed to dealer for repair.

The pre collision safety feature is very glitchy. The warning comes on all the time, and no I’m not falling to close. But what scared me was I was driving home from work sunny conditions mild traffic. Typical city road 35mph. First the warning went off then right after it slammed on the brakes.

While driving the blindside indicators will come on when nothing is there. The window switches and door lock button on the driver side door will not work when the blindside indicators are on. Also the light on the door lock button turns on and off randomly when the indicators are on with nothing there.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA complaint database, recalls and manufacturer communications

Which Chevrolet Colorado years have the most electrical complaints?

2016, 120; 2023, 42; 2017, 41. Raw counts, and an older year has had longer to collect them; by share of each year's own complaints the loudest is the 2022 (36%).

Is there a recall for the electrical system on the Chevrolet Colorado?

No recall campaign is filed under this heading on any of these model years. A bulletin is not a recall: it carries no federal duty to repair for free.

When do electrical problems show up on the Chevrolet Colorado?

Owners who gave an odometer reading reported it at a median of 25,547 miles across the model years; half of them between 9,000 and 41,000. That is when reports cluster, not the life of a part.

What does NHTSA's "Electrical System" heading cover?

Wiring, modules, batteries, charging, infotainment and driver displays — NHTSA's broadest heading. Owners choose the heading when they file, so it says which area of the vehicle the complaint is about, not which part failed.
