Mercedes-Benz filed this with NHTSA as a service bulletin dated Sep 5, 2025, received Apr 24, 2025, about the fuel/propulsion system — 2 documents under this number. It names 13 model years (2020–2025). A service bulletin is not a safety recall: it is the manufacturer telling its dealers how to diagnose or repair a condition, and whether the work is paid for depends on the warranty in force. Quoting the number at a service desk can save a diagnosis.

What the bulletin says

Source: NHTSA's summary of the manufacturer's communication

Complaint A pulsating knocking noise (e.g. clattering) can be heard underneath the bench seat, particularly in the case of a full tank (1/1 fill level). Cause The vibrating air column of the purge flow volume triggers the fill limit vent valve (FLVV) to open and close repeatedly when the fuel tank is full. Remedy By reducing the fuel quantity by around 5 liters, the noise can no longer be heard. In isolated cases, the noise can also be amplified by a fuel tank installed under stress and therefore lines adjacent to the body-in-white (above the fuel tank). In this case, the installation position of the fuel tank and the contact surfaces to the body-in-white must be checked. To do so, loosen the fuel tank and refasten it. Please do not replace component parts such as the fuel tank, activated charcoal canister, purge valve or delivery module, as this does not provide a remedy. If a similar noise can be heard with a tank fill level of, for example, 3/4 or 1/4 and not with a full tank (1/1), there is a different issue.

The summary is NHTSA’s abstract of the document, as filed under 49 CFR 579.5. One communication is usually filed as several documents — the bulletin, a dealer notice, an owner letter — and the number on any of them finds this page. A PDF link is shown only once NHTSA’s own server has been seen to serve that document; the rest are checked over the following nights. Quote the number at a service desk; it is what the dealer’s system is keyed on.

What owners reported

Source: NHTSA complaint database

Owners of the 13 model years this bulletin names have filed 553 complaints with NHTSA since 2015. 30 of them name Fuel/Propulsion System — the same broad component group this bulletin is filed under. NHTSA groups complaints coarsely, so that means the same area of the vehicle, not necessarily the same fault.

The contact owns a 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS580. The contact stated that after entering the vehicle, the contact became aware of an abnormally strong fuel odor inside the vehicle. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to two independent mechanics who referred the contact to the local dealer for assistance.

The car has stalled 4 or 5 times, while driving in traffic. This can obviously be life threatening. The check engine light came on yesterday. We recently brought the car to Mercedes Benz in Daytona Beach, Florida. They told us we had low pressure in the cylinders, and needed a new cylinder head for $10,000.

2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class · Fuel/Propulsion System · filed with NHTSA Aug 7, 2025 · ODI 11679179

Nov. 7, 2025 - After returning home around 4pm, I parked the car in my garage, and entered my home. Due to the sound of the fan motor which stays on after you shut off the car, it is possible that the engine was still running when I thought it was off. Please note that my garage is attached to my home.

A complaint is one owner’s account, not a defect finding, and a bulletin is not a recall. Nothing here says this bulletin was issued because of these complaints, or that the repair it describes fixed them. Complaint files on this site begin in 2015.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR 579.5

Is Mercedes-Benz LI47.10-P-079166 a recall?

No. A service bulletin is a manufacturer communication filed with NHTSA under 49 CFR 579.5; a safety recall carries an NHTSA campaign number (two digits, a letter, six digits) and a federal duty to repair for free. Check the vehicle’s recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or on its page here.

Is the LI47.10-P-079166 repair free?

Not automatically. A service bulletin describes how to diagnose or repair a condition; who pays depends on the warranty in force, any extension, and the dealer. Quoting the number can save a diagnosis either way. Every Mercedes-Benz warranty extension on file lists the ones Mercedes-Benz has filed.

Which vehicles does LI47.10-P-079166 cover?

The manufacturer filed it against 13 model years: 2025 Mercedes-Benz E-Class, 2025 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class, 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class, 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class, 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class, 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class and more. Whether one particular vehicle is affected is a matter of its VIN and its build, not its model year alone.
