Mazda bulletin SA-024-24
What it saysA tapping/rattling noise may be noticed from the valve train area. NHTSA’s full summary ↓
Mazda filed this with NHTSA as a service bulletin dated Apr 19, 2024, received May 4, 2024, about the engine. It names 16 model years (2021–2024). A service bulletin is not a safety recall: it is the manufacturer telling its dealers how to diagnose or repair a condition, and whether the work is paid for depends on the warranty in force. Quoting the number at a service desk can save a diagnosis.

What the bulletin says
Source: NHTSA's summary of the manufacturer's communicationA tapping/rattling noise may be noticed from the valve train area. This operating condition can occur on new vehicles which have been delivered to Mazda dealers (due to loading and unloading from transport trucks or customers moving their vehicles in and out of their garages to wash the vehicle, etc.). This condition may also occur if the engine is not allowed to warm up after multiple cold starts.

The summary is NHTSA’s abstract of the document, as filed under 49 CFR 579.5. One communication is usually filed as several documents — the bulletin, a dealer notice, an owner letter — and the number on any of them finds this page. A PDF link is shown only once NHTSA’s own server has been seen to serve that document; the rest are checked over the following nights. Quote the number at a service desk; it is what the dealer’s system is keyed on.

What owners reported
Source: NHTSA complaint databaseOwners of the 16 model years this bulletin names have filed 743 complaints with NHTSA since 2015. 208 of them name Engine — the same broad component group this bulletin is filed under. NHTSA groups complaints coarsely, so that means the same area of the vehicle, not necessarily the same fault.
The engine on my 2022 naturally aspirated Mazda CX5, is making a loud ticking noise when cold started. The vehicle is in pristine condition and is services regularly at the dealer with only 33,000 miles. The ticking noise is a known issue for this make and model, where Mazda has issued a TSB for faulty hydraulic valve lash.

My 2023 Mazda 3 started to have a more terrible and annoying rattle after 3000 miles. The engine will resonate and knock when it reaches a certain speed. The slow speed light throttle acceleration rattles. The most annoying thing is the multiple rattles inside, dash, door panels, and roof. It is like a can in the summer.

At around 26,528 miles my 2022 CX-30 2.5s (not the turbo) developed a "Low Oil Pressure" warning while driving between 55-65mph on 07/06/2025. The car has had regular oil and filter changes about every 5K miles. The last oil and filter change was at 25,259 mileage on 05/25/2025. There aren't any visible oil leaks.

A complaint is one owner’s account, not a defect finding, and a bulletin is not a recall. Nothing here says this bulletin was issued because of these complaints, or that the repair it describes fixed them. Complaint files on this site begin in 2015.

Common questions
Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR 579.5Is Mazda SA-024-24 a recall?
No. A service bulletin is a manufacturer communication filed with NHTSA under 49 CFR 579.5; a safety recall carries an NHTSA campaign number (two digits, a letter, six digits) and a federal duty to repair for free. Check the vehicle’s recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or on its page here.
Is the SA-024-24 repair free?
Not automatically. A service bulletin describes how to diagnose or repair a condition; who pays depends on the warranty in force, any extension, and the dealer. Quoting the number can save a diagnosis either way. Every Mazda warranty extension on file lists the ones Mazda has filed.
Which vehicles does SA-024-24 cover?
The manufacturer filed it against 16 model years: 2021 Mazda CX-3, 2024 Mazda CX-30, 2023 Mazda CX-30, 2022 Mazda CX-30, 2021 Mazda CX-30, 2024 Mazda CX-5 and more. Whether one particular vehicle is affected is a matter of its VIN and its build, not its model year alone.
