Mazda bulletin 09-048-24a

What it saysSome customers may experience the following symptoms of the wireless charger (Qi), even when the mobile device (smartphone etc.) is placed in the proper position on the wireless charger (Qi). NHTSA’s full summary ↓

Mazda filed this with NHTSA as a service bulletin dated Dec 11, 2024, received Jan 4, 2025, about the electrical system. It names 7 model years (2021–2024). A service bulletin is not a safety recall: it is the manufacturer telling its dealers how to diagnose or repair a condition, and whether the work is paid for depends on the warranty in force. Quoting the number at a service desk can save a diagnosis.

2022-2023 Mazda2 (Mexico built) before 3 Jan 2023 “Produced before Jan. 3, 2023”

What it applies to, as the document itself states it — the build window in the manufacturer’s own words, read by machine from the PDF NHTSA serves. The build date is on the certification label in the driver’s door jamb; the dealer settles a borderline vehicle by its VIN.

Some customers may experience the following symptoms of the wireless charger (Qi), even when the mobile device (smartphone etc.) is placed in the proper position on the wireless charger (Qi). It does not start charging. It stops charging with the indicator flashing in red after starting. It stops charging without any visible sign after starting. For CX-50, some customers may experience that despite placing the MagSafe®-equipped iPhone® at the center of the wireless charger, charging stops after about ten seconds. MagSafe-equipped iPhones use magnets to align the charger and the device. When charging MagSafe-equipped iPhones with a non-MagSafe compatible charger, improper alignment can cause the magnetic field required for charging to be disrupted by the magnets, significantly reducing charging efficiency.

Read by machine from the document NHTSA serves (6 pages), read Sep 30, 2026. A part number is shown only where it matches Mazda’s own catalogue shape, an operation only with its code and time, and a description only where the reader got it whole; anything it could not settle is left out, and the PDF is the record. Times are the manufacturer’s warranty allowances, not a quote. Listings and prices on eBay Motors are the seller’s.

Affiliate disclosure: some links on this page are affiliate links. If you request a quote or buy through them we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Nothing on this page changes because of it.

The summary is NHTSA’s abstract of the document, as filed under 49 CFR 579.5. One communication is usually filed as several documents — the bulletin, a dealer notice, an owner letter — and the number on any of them finds this page. A PDF link is shown only once NHTSA’s own server has been seen to serve that document; the rest are checked over the following nights. Quote the number at a service desk; it is what the dealer’s system is keyed on.

What owners reported

Source: NHTSA complaint database

Owners of the 7 model years this bulletin names have filed 232 complaints with NHTSA since 2015. 26 of them name Electrical System — the same broad component group this bulletin is filed under. NHTSA groups complaints coarsely, so that means the same area of the vehicle, not necessarily the same fault.

The contact owns a 2022 Mazda CX-9. The contact stated that the vehicle was being operated with the front driver's side seat warmer activated to the highest heat level. After driving for several hours, the vehicle was parked. While exiting the vehicle, the contact experienced pain in the rear thigh area of each leg.

2022 Mazda CX-9 · Electrical System · filed with NHTSA Apr 1, 2026 · ODI 11728503

The vehicle had the original OEM battery fail at 15 months. It dropped to 7v under light load. It's a bad battery. Upon being jump started, the power steering went in and out while driving and the dashboard blinked on and off...throwing a lot of errors that are unrelated to the battery problem.

2024 Mazda CX-50 · Electrical System · filed with NHTSA Sep 2, 2025 · ODI 11684560

The vehicle unexpectedly caught fire and the results could have been catastrophic. Almost new car under warranty. All details are in the uploaded PDF letter and photos. I have contacted Mazda and they claim they do not investigate, only insurance company will investigate.

2022 Mazda CX-5 · Electrical System · filed with NHTSA Dec 13, 2023 · ODI 11560007

A complaint is one owner’s account, not a defect finding, and a bulletin is not a recall. Nothing here says this bulletin was issued because of these complaints, or that the repair it describes fixed them. Complaint files on this site begin in 2015.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR 579.5

Is Mazda 09-048-24a a recall?

No. A service bulletin is a manufacturer communication filed with NHTSA under 49 CFR 579.5; a safety recall carries an NHTSA campaign number (two digits, a letter, six digits) and a federal duty to repair for free. Check the vehicle’s recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or on its page here.

Is the 09-048-24a repair free?

Not automatically. A service bulletin describes how to diagnose or repair a condition; who pays depends on the warranty in force, any extension, and the dealer. Quoting the number can save a diagnosis either way. Every Mazda warranty extension on file lists the ones Mazda has filed.

Which vehicles does 09-048-24a cover?

The manufacturer filed it against 7 model years: 2021 Mazda CX-3, 2022 Mazda CX-5, 2024 Mazda CX-50, 2023 Mazda CX-50, 2023 Mazda CX-9, 2022 Mazda CX-9 and more. Whether one particular vehicle is affected is a matter of its VIN and its build, not its model year alone. The document itself sets the build window: 2022 CX-3: built before 11 Jul 2022; 2022 CX-5: built before 1 Aug 2022; 2021-2023 CX-9: built before 21 Nov 2022 — the build date is on the certification label in the driver’s door jamb.
