What it saysThis bulletin provides information to perform a partial replacement of the sunroof wind deflector and mechanism arms on some 2019-2022MY Telluride (ON) vehicles produced from February 15, 2019 through January 19, 2022. NHTSA’s full summary ↓

Kia filed this with NHTSA as a service bulletin dated Jul 6, 2023, received Aug 2, 2023, about the structure. It names 3 model years (2020–2022). A service bulletin is not a safety recall: it is the manufacturer telling its dealers how to diagnose or repair a condition, and whether the work is paid for depends on the warranty in force. Quoting the number at a service desk can save a diagnosis.

2022MY Telluride (ON) 15 Feb 2019 – 19 Jan 2022 “Produced from February 15, 2019 through January 19, 2022”
Telluride (ON) 15 Feb 2019 – 19 Jan 2022 “Telluride (ON) February 15, 2019 to January 19, 2022”

What it applies to, as the document itself states it — the build window in the manufacturer’s own words, read by machine from the PDF NHTSA serves. The build date is on the certification label in the driver’s door jamb; the dealer settles a borderline vehicle by its VIN.

The summary is NHTSA’s abstract of the document, as filed under 49 CFR 579.5. One communication is usually filed as several documents — the bulletin, a dealer notice, an owner letter — and the number on any of them finds this page. A PDF link is shown only once NHTSA’s own server has been seen to serve that document; the rest are checked over the following nights. Quote the number at a service desk; it is what the dealer’s system is keyed on.

What owners reported

Source: NHTSA complaint database

Owners of the 3 model years this bulletin names have filed 1,476 complaints with NHTSA since 2015. 388 of them name Visibility/Wiper, Structure — the same broad component group this bulletin is filed under. NHTSA groups complaints coarsely, so that means the same area of the vehicle, not necessarily the same fault.

On the 2020 Kia Telluride, the 95 owners who gave an odometer reading for Visibility/Wiper reported it at a median of 5,000 miles. That figure is one model year’s, not the whole range this bulletin covers — medians from different model years are not averaged.

While driving down the highway going maybe 45 MPH, something flew up and hit the windshield causing a large chip and spiderweb to form immediately. Whatever hit the windshield was so small I never saw it. This has happened plenty of other times in other vehicles without causing any damage

2020 Kia Telluride · Visibility/Wiper · filed with NHTSA Sep 13, 2019 · ODI 11255266

Brand new 2020 Kia Telluride purchased on 3/18/19. On 4/6/19 the front passenger door would not open at 1273 miles. Took it to Kia dealership garage on 4/8/19 and they could not fix it. I filed a formal complaint with corporate Kia on 4/9/19. No one is calling me back.

2020 Kia Telluride · Structure · filed with NHTSA Apr 11, 2019 · ODI 11195709

Bought Kia Telluride 2021 in dec 2020, its windshield broke it self which appears to be frame stress related issue, dealership engineers came to the same conclusion. I researched more and found the same reported issues on year 2019 and 2020 Telluride.

A complaint is one owner’s account, not a defect finding, and a bulletin is not a recall. Nothing here says this bulletin was issued because of these complaints, or that the repair it describes fixed them. Complaint files on this site begin in 2015.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR 579.5

Is Kia TSB_BOD319 a recall?

No. A service bulletin is a manufacturer communication filed with NHTSA under 49 CFR 579.5; a safety recall carries an NHTSA campaign number (two digits, a letter, six digits) and a federal duty to repair for free. Check the vehicle’s recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or on its page here.

Is the TSB_BOD319 repair free?

Not automatically. A service bulletin describes how to diagnose or repair a condition; who pays depends on the warranty in force, any extension, and the dealer. Quoting the number can save a diagnosis either way. Every Kia warranty extension on file lists the ones Kia has filed.

Which vehicles does TSB_BOD319 cover?

The manufacturer filed it against 3 model years: 2022 Kia Telluride, 2021 Kia Telluride, 2020 Kia Telluride. Whether one particular vehicle is affected is a matter of its VIN and its build, not its model year alone. The document itself sets the build window: 2022MY Telluride (ON): built 15 Feb 2019 – 19 Jan 2022; Telluride (ON): built 15 Feb 2019 – 19 Jan 2022 — the build date is on the certification label in the driver’s door jamb.
