Jeep bulletin 9004003

What it saysBacklite Heated Liftgate Glass Assembly: For rear window defrost inoperative concerns where heated glass electrical tab has become detached, it is not necessary to replace the glass assembly. NHTSA’s full summary ↓

Jeep filed this with NHTSA as a service bulletin dated May 20, 2025, received May 29, 2025, about the structure. It names 8 model years (2018–2025). A service bulletin is not a safety recall: it is the manufacturer telling its dealers how to diagnose or repair a condition, and whether the work is paid for depends on the warranty in force. Quoting the number at a service desk can save a diagnosis.

What the bulletin says

Source: NHTSA's summary of the manufacturer's communication

Backlite Heated Liftgate Glass Assembly: For rear window defrost inoperative concerns where heated glass electrical tab has become detached, it is not necessary to replace the glass assembly. For loose or detached electrical tab, refer to TSB 23-007-25 for repair procedures on reattaching a loose tab. For burned or discolored gridlines on hard tops, DO NOT change the complete Flipper glass assembly. This discoloration is oxidation of the ceramic silver material and is normal. The Engineering standard call out the fact that this bus bar will change in color and is not a deterioration of the material or performance.

The summary is NHTSA’s abstract of the document, as filed under 49 CFR 579.5. One communication is usually filed as several documents — the bulletin, a dealer notice, an owner letter — and the number on any of them finds this page. A PDF link is shown only once NHTSA’s own server has been seen to serve that document; the rest are checked over the following nights. Quote the number at a service desk; it is what the dealer’s system is keyed on.

What owners reported

Source: NHTSA complaint database

Owners of the 8 model years this bulletin names have filed 6,008 complaints with NHTSA since 2015.

On the 2018 Jeep Wrangler, the 53 owners who gave an odometer reading for Structure reported it at a median of 5,000 miles. That figure is one model year’s, not the whole range this bulletin covers — medians from different model years are not averaged.

Military member stationed overseas. Purchased vehicle through Military Auto Source. Dealer has to take wrangler into local Jeep dealer. Dealer heard banging on right side of wheel. When local Jeep dealer completed inspection they noted the chassiss weld completely missing. This is a huge safety issue.

2022 Jeep Wrangler · Structure · filed with NHTSA Oct 29, 2022 · ODI 11491411

While driving in high winds, hood flutters.....rises up about 1/2-1 inch due to stretching of hood clamps. While it hasn't broke, I have read of it breaking on Jeep forums. I would think over time with solar exposure, temperature changes and repeated stress, the possibility of failure would be great.

2018 Jeep Wrangler · Structure · filed with NHTSA May 30, 2018 · ODI 11098878

Bonded intrusion bar separated from door skin. Separation causes rubbing/chaffing/noise when door is operated and was what alerted me to the presence of the issue. Taken to dealership and was told the door must be replaced in order to fix the issue.

2020 Jeep Wrangler · Structure · filed with NHTSA Jan 3, 2020 · ODI 11296938

A complaint is one owner’s account, not a defect finding, and a bulletin is not a recall. Nothing here says this bulletin was issued because of these complaints, or that the repair it describes fixed them. Complaint files on this site begin in 2015.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR 579.5

Is Jeep 9004003 a recall?

No. A service bulletin is a manufacturer communication filed with NHTSA under 49 CFR 579.5; a safety recall carries an NHTSA campaign number (two digits, a letter, six digits) and a federal duty to repair for free. Check the vehicle’s recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or on its page here.

Is the 9004003 repair free?

Not automatically. A service bulletin describes how to diagnose or repair a condition; who pays depends on the warranty in force, any extension, and the dealer. Quoting the number can save a diagnosis either way. Every Stellantis warranty extension on file lists the ones Stellantis has filed.

Which vehicles does 9004003 cover?

The manufacturer filed it against 8 model years: 2025 Jeep Wrangler, 2024 Jeep Wrangler, 2023 Jeep Wrangler, 2022 Jeep Wrangler, 2021 Jeep Wrangler, 2020 Jeep Wrangler and more. Whether one particular vehicle is affected is a matter of its VIN and its build, not its model year alone.
