Hyundai bulletin 23-01-073H-1

What it saysCertain 19-23MY Kona Electric (OS EV) vehicles may experience a condition of EV warning light ON with Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P1AA6 to P1AAF found stored. NHTSA’s full summary ↓

Hyundai filed this with NHTSA as a service bulletin dated Oct 17, 2023, received Nov 7, 2023, about the power train — 2 documents under this number. It names 5 model years (2019–2023). A service bulletin is not a safety recall: it is the manufacturer telling its dealers how to diagnose or repair a condition, and whether the work is paid for depends on the warranty in force. Quoting the number at a service desk can save a diagnosis.

What the bulletin says

Built 28 Aug 2018 – 8 Mar 2023 “Produced from 8/28/2018 to 3/8/2023”

What it applies to, as the document itself states it — the build window in the manufacturer’s own words, read by machine from the PDF NHTSA serves. The build date is on the certification label in the driver’s door jamb; the dealer settles a borderline vehicle by its VIN.

Certain 19-23MY Kona Electric (OS EV) vehicles may experience a condition of EV warning light ON with Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P1AA6 to P1AAF found stored. The Battery Management System (BMS) software update will be performed to enhance battery diagnostics logic. The service procedure contained in TSB 23-01-073H-1 (or latest version) is summarized as follows: • Vehicles that do not have EV Warning Light “ON” will only need the BMS software update. • Certain vehicles incurring EV Warning Light “ON” and DTC P1AA6 found stored with Freeze Frame Data Information Code 1=128 will only require the BMS Update. • Certain other DTC P1AA6 Information Code 1-2 values or DTC P1AA7 to P1AAF will require the Battery System Assembly (BSA) to be replaced and then the BMS Update to be performed.

Read by machine from the document NHTSA serves (10 pages), read Sep 30, 2026. A part number is shown only where it matches Hyundai’s own catalogue shape, an operation only with its code and time, and a description only where the reader got it whole; anything it could not settle is left out, and the PDF is the record. Times are the manufacturer’s warranty allowances, not a quote. Listings and prices on eBay Motors are the seller’s.

The summary is NHTSA’s abstract of the document, as filed under 49 CFR 579.5. One communication is usually filed as several documents — the bulletin, a dealer notice, an owner letter — and the number on any of them finds this page. A PDF link is shown only once NHTSA’s own server has been seen to serve that document; the rest are checked over the following nights. Quote the number at a service desk; it is what the dealer’s system is keyed on.

What owners reported

Source: NHTSA complaint database

Owners of the 5 model years this bulletin names have filed 778 complaints with NHTSA since 2015. 90 of them name Power Train — the same broad component group this bulletin is filed under. NHTSA groups complaints coarsely, so that means the same area of the vehicle, not necessarily the same fault.

I found a lot of debris of metals contaminated in the gear reduction oil when I changed my gear reduction oil. I had a Vortex oil lug nut, which it sucks all of the metal debris in. I have pictures of that as a proof. I think this is a design flaw that Hyundai should recall, but they didn’t.

2022 Hyundai Kona · Power Train · filed with NHTSA Aug 21, 2025

Been waiting six months for Hyundai part to fix a fire hazard. They knowingly installed a defective part during manufacturing of the vehicle. A scared to drive the car knowing it can catch fire at any moment. Hyundai refuses to compensate in any way

2023 Hyundai Kona · Power Train · filed with NHTSA Nov 17, 2023

We just had our 2020 Kona updated from the dealer with major software and recall updates. Since that point the car has been draining from the 12volt battery on it's own and killing the charging circuit for the battery.

2020 Hyundai Kona · Power Train · filed with NHTSA Apr 2, 2024

A complaint is one owner’s account, not a defect finding, and a bulletin is not a recall. Nothing here says this bulletin was issued because of these complaints, or that the repair it describes fixed them. Complaint files on this site begin in 2015.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR 579.5

Is Hyundai 23-01-073H-1 a recall?

No. A service bulletin is a manufacturer communication filed with NHTSA under 49 CFR 579.5; a safety recall carries an NHTSA campaign number (two digits, a letter, six digits) and a federal duty to repair for free. Check the vehicle’s recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or on its page here.

Is the 23-01-073H-1 repair free?

Not automatically. A service bulletin describes how to diagnose or repair a condition; who pays depends on the warranty in force, any extension, and the dealer. Quoting the number can save a diagnosis either way.

Which vehicles does 23-01-073H-1 cover?

The manufacturer filed it against 5 model years: 2023 Hyundai Kona, 2022 Hyundai Kona, 2021 Hyundai Kona, 2020 Hyundai Kona, 2019 Hyundai Kona. Whether one particular vehicle is affected is a matter of its VIN and its build, not its model year alone. The document itself sets the build window: built 28 Aug 2018 – 8 Mar 2023 — the build date is on the certification label in the driver’s door jamb.
