Ford bulletin SSM 53962

What it saysSome 2021-2025 Bronco vehicles may exhibit a water leak from the A-pillar, overhead console/upfitter switches and/or sun visors. NHTSA’s full summary ↓

Ford filed this with NHTSA as a service bulletin dated Jun 20, 2025, received Jun 24, 2025, about the structure. It names 5 model years (2021–2025). A service bulletin is not a safety recall: it is the manufacturer telling its dealers how to diagnose or repair a condition, and whether the work is paid for depends on the warranty in force. Quoting the number at a service desk can save a diagnosis.

What the bulletin says

Source: NHTSA's summary of the manufacturer's communication

Some 2021-2025 Bronco vehicles may exhibit a water leak from the A-pillar, overhead console/upfitter switches and/or sun visors. If a leak is identified from this area, refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 501-18 Pinpoint Test (PPT) G for water leak diagnosis. If the PPT leads to the replacement of the header seal, a revised header seal has been released for service (M2DZ-7803110-H) which contains a thicker consistent bead of butyl across the entire length of the seal. The header seal will need to be firmly depressed and massaged to make sure all of the butyl that is across the entire header seal will properly adhere to the body, creating a water-tight seal. For claiming, use causal part 7803110 and labor operation 03110A in Section 12 of the Service Labor Time Standards (SLTS) Manual.

The summary is NHTSA’s abstract of the document, as filed under 49 CFR 579.5. One communication is usually filed as several documents — the bulletin, a dealer notice, an owner letter — and the number on any of them finds this page. A PDF link is shown only once NHTSA’s own server has been seen to serve that document; the rest are checked over the following nights. Quote the number at a service desk; it is what the dealer’s system is keyed on.

What owners reported

Source: NHTSA complaint database

Owners of the 5 model years this bulletin names have filed 989 complaints with NHTSA since 2015. 188 of them name Visibility/Wiper, Structure — the same broad component group this bulletin is filed under. NHTSA groups complaints coarsely, so that means the same area of the vehicle, not necessarily the same fault.

The contact owns a 2023 Ford Bronco. The contact stated while driving in rainy weather at an undisclosed speed, the windshield wipers reduced speed and became inoperable. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the mechanic was able to duplicate the failure; however, the mechanic was unable to determine the cause of the failure.

When operating the wipers at either of the highest/fastest settings (LOW and HIGH), after about 45 seconds, the wipers will revert to intermittent. This happens at various driving speeds (not specific to driving slow or fast). When driving in heavy rain, it is very dangerous to suddenly not have adequate wipers

2021 Ford Bronco · Visibility/Wiper · filed with NHTSA Feb 28, 2022 · ODI 11454580

Wipers would not stay working as they should on any setting during heavy snow, sleet, and rain. Vehicle has several intermittent settings, as well as (2) continuous wiping settings. The all settings would work as they should for around 60 seconds, then slow down to a very slow intermittent wipe.

A complaint is one owner’s account, not a defect finding, and a bulletin is not a recall. Nothing here says this bulletin was issued because of these complaints, or that the repair it describes fixed them. Complaint files on this site begin in 2015.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR 579.5

Is Ford SSM 53962 a recall?

No. A service bulletin is a manufacturer communication filed with NHTSA under 49 CFR 579.5; a safety recall carries an NHTSA campaign number (two digits, a letter, six digits) and a federal duty to repair for free. Check the vehicle’s recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or on its page here.

Is the SSM 53962 repair free?

Not automatically. A service bulletin describes how to diagnose or repair a condition; who pays depends on the warranty in force, any extension, and the dealer. Quoting the number can save a diagnosis either way.

Which vehicles does SSM 53962 cover?

The manufacturer filed it against 5 model years: 2025 Ford Bronco, 2024 Ford Bronco, 2023 Ford Bronco, 2022 Ford Bronco, 2021 Ford Bronco. Whether one particular vehicle is affected is a matter of its VIN and its build, not its model year alone.
