GM bulletin 19-NA-206

What it saysThis service bulletin provides repair information to correct a customer concern of seeing an intermittent Shift to Park message displayed while vehicle is in Park. NHTSA’s full summary ↓

GM filed this with NHTSA as a service bulletin dated Mar 13, 2024, received Mar 19, 2024, about the electrical system. It names 14 model years across Chevrolet and GMC (2016–2019). A service bulletin is not a safety recall: it is the manufacturer telling its dealers how to diagnose or repair a condition, and whether the work is paid for depends on the warranty in force. Quoting the number at a service desk can save a diagnosis.

The summary is NHTSA’s abstract of the document, as filed under 49 CFR 579.5. One communication is usually filed as several documents — the bulletin, a dealer notice, an owner letter — and the number on any of them finds this page. A PDF link is shown only once NHTSA’s own server has been seen to serve that document; the rest are checked over the following nights. Quote the number at a service desk; it is what the dealer’s system is keyed on.

What owners reported

Source: NHTSA complaint database

Owners of the 14 model years this bulletin names have filed 6,191 complaints with NHTSA since 2015. 3,771 of them name Power Train, Electrical System — the same broad component group this bulletin is filed under. NHTSA groups complaints coarsely, so that means the same area of the vehicle, not necessarily the same fault.

On the 2017 GMC Acadia, the 156 owners who gave an odometer reading for Power Train reported it at a median of 36,128 miles. That figure is one model year’s, not the whole range this bulletin covers — medians from different model years are not averaged.

The contact owns a 2018 Gmc Acadia. When the contact turned off the vehicle and removed the key from the ignition, the vehicle's warning sensor went off, the radio remained on, and the automatic door locks failed. As a result, the contact was unable to lock the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified.

While driving on rainy day about 20 MPH the engine would alternate between a power surge to no power. This continued for several minutes while driving (nowhere to pull over) until the engine completely died. Both the jerking forward and the shutoff while driving could have caused a horrible accident but fortunately we were lucky.

On 2017 Acadia with it's 6txx transmission, the shifts from 2-3 feel weird (especially) when driving at slow speeds. You get a feeling as if tranny takes more than usual time to engage into 3rd gear, when already disengaged from 2nd gear. This is similar to what feeling one might get if you moved from 2nd - neutral - 3rd gear.

A complaint is one owner’s account, not a defect finding, and a bulletin is not a recall. Nothing here says this bulletin was issued because of these complaints, or that the repair it describes fixed them. Complaint files on this site begin in 2015.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR 579.5

Is GM 19-NA-206 a recall?

No. A service bulletin is a manufacturer communication filed with NHTSA under 49 CFR 579.5; a safety recall carries an NHTSA campaign number (two digits, a letter, six digits) and a federal duty to repair for free. Check the vehicle’s recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or on its page here.

Is the 19-NA-206 repair free?

Not automatically. A service bulletin describes how to diagnose or repair a condition; who pays depends on the warranty in force, any extension, and the dealer. Quoting the number can save a diagnosis either way. Every GM warranty extension on file lists the ones GM has filed.

Which vehicles does 19-NA-206 cover?

The manufacturer filed it against 14 model years across 2 brands (Chevrolet and GMC): 2019 Chevrolet Blazer, 2019 Chevrolet Malibu, 2018 Chevrolet Malibu, 2017 Chevrolet Malibu, 2016 Chevrolet Malibu, 2019 Chevrolet Traverse and more. Whether one particular vehicle is affected is a matter of its VIN and its build, not its model year alone.
