Audi bulletin TSB-2054480_5

What it saysThis bulletin provides repair information for Panoramic sunroofs. NHTSA’s full summary ↓

Audi filed this with NHTSA as a service bulletin dated Feb 19, 2025, received Mar 19, 2025, about the structure. It names 30 model years (2016–2020). A service bulletin is not a safety recall: it is the manufacturer telling its dealers how to diagnose or repair a condition, and whether the work is paid for depends on the warranty in force. Quoting the number at a service desk can save a diagnosis.

The summary is NHTSA’s abstract of the document, as filed under 49 CFR 579.5. One communication is usually filed as several documents — the bulletin, a dealer notice, an owner letter — and the number on any of them finds this page. A PDF link is shown only once NHTSA’s own server has been seen to serve that document; the rest are checked over the following nights. Quote the number at a service desk; it is what the dealer’s system is keyed on.

What owners reported

Source: NHTSA complaint database

Owners of the 30 model years this bulletin names have filed 705 complaints with NHTSA since 2015. 9 of them name Structure — the same broad component group this bulletin is filed under. NHTSA groups complaints coarsely, so that means the same area of the vehicle, not necessarily the same fault.

My husband and son were driving down the road and the sunroof exploded causing glass shards to go everywhere. Temp was 43 degree. According to my husband, it sounded like a bomb went off. Both my husband and son were covered in glass. We had to pull small glass pieces from my son. The vehicle is currently at the dealership.

2019 Audi RS · Structure · filed with NHTSA Apr 3, 2023 · ODI 11515193

I was driving along the express way when I heard a loud explosion, I look up to see my sunroof exploded and there was glass all over the kids and I. The explosion was so loud I lost control of the car and almost veered off the road. It was terrifying. It happened last year in the winter then happened this year as well.

2018 Audi A5 · Structure · filed with NHTSA Jan 10, 2025 · ODI 11635186

I was traveling at ~65mph on the freeway when the sunroof spontaneously exploded. It was louder than a gunshot—I nearly lost control of the vehicle. The explosion occurred in the outward direction. There was no evidence of impact of preexisting damage. Internet research suggests this is not an uncommon occurrence

2020 Audi A6 · Structure · filed with NHTSA Nov 9, 2025 · ODI 11698392

A complaint is one owner’s account, not a defect finding, and a bulletin is not a recall. Nothing here says this bulletin was issued because of these complaints, or that the repair it describes fixed them. Complaint files on this site begin in 2015.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR 579.5

Is Audi TSB-2054480_5 a recall?

No. A service bulletin is a manufacturer communication filed with NHTSA under 49 CFR 579.5; a safety recall carries an NHTSA campaign number (two digits, a letter, six digits) and a federal duty to repair for free. Check the vehicle’s recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or on its page here.

Is the TSB-2054480_5 repair free?

Not automatically. A service bulletin describes how to diagnose or repair a condition; who pays depends on the warranty in force, any extension, and the dealer. Quoting the number can save a diagnosis either way.

Which vehicles does TSB-2054480_5 cover?

The manufacturer filed it against 30 model years: 2020 Audi A3, 2019 Audi A3, 2018 Audi A3, 2017 Audi A3, 2016 Audi A3, 2020 Audi A5 and more. Whether one particular vehicle is affected is a matter of its VIN and its build, not its model year alone.
